Looking for an upgrade from my DT990.

Want something that is a lot more open.
Can be worn for long hours and are comfortable.
A Detachable cable would be nice.
Good and plenty bass.
Large sound stage.
Nends to be durable. I transport my main headphones often.
$3-400 used or new

Doubt your going to find headphones more open then the DT990.
Which DT990 do you have (32-Ohm or 250-Ohm or 600-Ohm)?

250.

COmpared to my grados they don't seem as open. The grados have a very airy feel to them, while the 990s feel more closed.

Maybe check out the HD599--spacious stage, open sound. Bass won't be as strong as the DT990, but it isn't weak. I have to say, like @PurpleAngel, I think it is going to be hard to best the 990 on all criteria you elucidate in your price range. For example, the HE400i meets a few criteria, but it does not have a very wide stage overall--certainly not as wide as the DT990.

What about one that has equal or better base and soundstage, can be worn for hours comfortably, and has the same open feeling of the grados?

Do you prefer the Grados over the DT990?

You said you don't mind used the HD-700's might not have the bass of the 990's but are not far off and imaging and soundstage are are hard to beat. They are one of my most comfortable headphones that I own you can wear them for hours without a problem. They are on the brighter side just as the 990's but not shrill by any means Just a thought.

Do you need to block outside noise?

No, not all, but they basically block no outside noise.

Well, the DT990 is a very hard headphone to beat. I agree with earlier advice. Give the HD598/599 a try. I have both DT990 Pro 250ohm and HD598. They're great compliments to each other. The Beyers are very crisp and analytical but with a big, controlled bass spectrum. Meanwhile, the Senheiser is a little more open, has a larger soundstage and gives a mellower, more relaxed sound. The bass isn't as deep on either the 598 or 599 but the treble isn't as scorching as the DT990s either.

Technically the Beyers are TOTL. The Sennheisers are technically less capable, but are (in my opinion) a lot more fun and non-fatiguing. Both have outstanding comfort levels. I often forget I have them on. Both brands. Of the two the Sennheiser blocks less outside sound.
