I'm looking for an upgrade or matching sound quality to the Sennheiser HD 650 and was wondering if there are vintage headphones that can hold up against or be better than the 650s. For modern headphones I've been looking at the AH-D7000 modded, HD 800, etc..

Not what I would consider "vintage", but there are times I prefer my K701, K240s and RS1 over my HD650.  The 650 is a great headphone, but its not without its weaknesses.  For me its not really about whats "better", its more like... whats "preferable", given my mood and what I am listening to.

I agree too but maybe I should have clarified it a bit more. I was wondering if there are any headphones from the 90's and earlier that can match/stand up against a modern headphones in the range of the HD650 as an example or if I'm wasting my time and should stick to modern headphones. I was more interested to see if anyone knew any information about vintage headphones that sound as desirable as high end modern headphones.

Thanks I'm considering buying these however I would prefer the Reference II or Gold so I'm still deciding.

i love my HD 650 / HD 600 no matter what i buy or try, I always end up listing to my favourite music with these cans on.

I agree, I'm still planning on keeping my HD650 however those are my only main high end headphones and I want some variety.
