I didn't say they sounded "alike". I said they sounded "on-par". And I think I'm absolutely right. In pure hi-fi terms, the 840 is much greater considered a "hi'fi" headphone than the M100, which is about as un-neutral as headphones get. It depends on what sort of signature you like. Neutral headphone lovers (ie hi-fi headphone lovers) would hate the M100.

The better the source, the better the sound will be from the headphone. Have u heard a hp coming out of anything other than ur Iphone? Probably not eh.

On par would mean that they're comparable to one another. They are not. They sound wildly different, thus they are not on par because someone who loves one would not like the other, regardless of how well the achieve their goals. That's like saying a horror movie is "on par" with a comedy because they're equally good in their respective genres.

Yes. You're correct. Somehow, in my life, I have only listened to music out of the iPhone I no longer have. That's literally the only thing I've ever used. And it's not like there's a thing called "signal chain" wherein the bottleneck of your sound will determine the quality of it, no. Upgrade the source and the headphones will always sound better because magic. Did you recable your UE6000's while you were at it?

This is a dumb argument and I'm not continuing it.

LOL. Grow up man.

But using your analogy- a good movie is a good movie no?

Seriously, u really think audtioning hp's exclusively with an Iphone is going to show them at their best? The M100s probably sound good out of them because it's sooo V-shaped. All bass and treble with nothing in-between. The freq response coming out of Iphones have been shown to be pretty much as neutral as daps get. Therefore, more neutral hps will sound "meh" coming out of them.

Try the UE with an amp or something. You'll see (hear) what Im saying.

PS- I own an Ipod Touch 64, and the sound is neutral and pretty un-dynamic to my ears. If it's anything like an Iphone 5, then I wouldn't use an I 5 unamped, or un-DAC-amped.

I agree with your point in that an amp can make noticeable SQ difference - one of the best cans I've heard and own which sounds awesome direct plugged into DAP without amp, is the ULTRASONE Signature DJ, simply amazing SQ, but in general, my experience is that an external amp does improve the SQ :)

Anyhow, moving on and back to specific topic quickly, can anybody inform:

So, what's the deal with these XL pads?

Are they available to purchase?

Is there a crocodile skin option?
:D
OP's pics of these pads sure look pretty :)

I just don't understand why XLs arent included with headphones today. I had to pay extra 35$ :(  That's not six star support. Three star tops v-moda...
Did anyone had a chance to see SPL change on graph with and without those XL coushions?

OH MY GOD GET EXCITED THEY ARE SO GOOD!

These little basterds really need to be yelled about. They give the V-Moda´s so much more space. A must.

I just got a pair of these, about 25$, i was expected so much about the comfort, cause i was suffered the pain on the original pad for 3-4 months, i have big ears, after replacing XL pad, i found out that my ears still touch the earcup (with the original, the headphone completely sat on my ears like on-ear headphones), it felt pretty good as you wear it, but still hurt after 1-2 hours of listening, dont know what to do now, sell the hp or mod the pads. I love the M100 so much, but the pads even XL pads are still so uncomfortable.

After a month or so I can say The M-100s are a bit of an uncomfortable headphone, plain and simple. They will never be comfy to wear for over two hours, most of the time I can´t get past one. You just have to live with it for that fun, bassy sound and those great looks. The XL pads don´t change the fact that they are not designed for comfort, like for example, some Sennheisers are. The XL pads do a better job at hiding it and - to my ears - improve the sound quality by adding space between the ear and the driver. The clamp force is still too big though. And the way the cups seal your years to block outside noise does create good noise isolation, but also a very small sealed chamber that is being pumped with air consantly. In a massive, impressive low frequency. And with a peak in the treble as well, to make them shinier. It gets hot in there, and they also create a ton of listening fatigue to whatever is inside the ear.

I wonder if the clamp force can be reduced by stretching the band somehow? Or does the memory metal mean they will always exert the same amount and vacuum seal the cup against your skull? I would love it if that preassure would be just a tad lighter. It would be more comfy and the sound would be a little less cramped.

Gonna try stretching them today.

Yes, you can successfully stretch them out to loosen the clamp. Just leave them overnight is an over-extended position and you should notice the clamping force improved.

But yes, I don't think comfort was very high on V-Moda's priorities. I think 1) Fashion 2) Sound 3) Comfort. A shame because I think comfort is just as important as sound, and they are both more important than style. hahah

I dont thinks the clamp force can be reduced on this M100, i've got the M100 for almost a year, and wearing it pretty much still nothing changes. I'm trying to mod the XL pad, let's see if it works. If not, i'm going to buy another pair of headphone with sound sign similar, but more comfortable, i'm thinking about HD7 DJ.

you have to over-extend/stretch them to loosen the clamping force. Just wearing them probably wouldn't make any significant change.
