Is there a Universal (SACD, DVDA, and maybe HDCD) player out there that also has a digital input so it could be used as a dac?

i've never heard of a universal player that can do that (although i'm by no means familiar with all of them).

two CDPs with that capability are the Quad 99CD and the Cambridge Audio 840C.

Looks like Cambridge Audio also released a new 740c that also has digital inputs at a lower price.

now that is an interesting looking player, simply by benefit of being somewhat cheaper than the 840c or Quad.

i wonder what the difference between it and the 840C is?

i also wonder whether it can read a 48khz signal.

No balanced outs, uses WM8740 instead of AD1955 dacs, not universal voltage, as for the rest I have no idea.

And yes, it can read a 48khz signal

quoted from the manual:

Digital input word widths supported
16 - 24 bit
Digital output word widths supported
16, 20, 24 bit
Digital input sampling frequencies supported
32kHz, 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz,
96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz
Digital output sampling frequencies supported
32kHz - 192kHz pass through
(Including 44.1kHz for CD)
48kHz, 96kHz, 192kHz upsampled

those are some nice stats... and it's using the same dual Wolfson DACs as in the Rega Apollo. verrrry tempting.

It looks like Electrocompaniet may have answered my prayers.

ah ha... so it has at least one SPDIF input. not bad... wonder what the pricing will be. do you need balanced outputs?

I don't balanced outputs or multichannel capabilities, but it never hurts to have extra features.
