Under-appreciated or little known classical music?

How ever did you guess what I'm listening to?

Btw, I have some Dowland done by Paul O'Dette. It's really quite beautiful. Let me know how the Naxos recording is. I believe Andreas Martín may have also have some Dowland recorded as well. He also has a wonderful theorbo recording of Bach's suites.

I've got that disk too but the countertenor have an ugly voice imo. I recommend Gerald Lesne/Ayres/Dowland/Naive. Lesne it's a fantastic countertenor (imo) with a 'creamy' voice and great sensibility.

Will let you know how this compares to the Willcocks and Rutter, which are on order.

Great, glad you liked it. Addictive stuff! I'll have to pick up that version at some point. I could never get tired of such "rich and strange" music...

Based on a review from another thread, I picked up Peter Mennin's Symphonies # 3 and #7 on Delos. So far, I get a Roy Harris vibe from 7 (the only one I've listened to), and I really like it.

Anyone else heard him?

Does anyone know of a good recording of 'Gurrelieder' by Schoenberg? I played it when I was a student (as an oboist) but have never heard a good recording of it. (Since the 70's) Another one I am after is 'The Dream of Gerontius' by Elgar - any good recordings?

For the Dream of Gerontius Barbirolli on EMI is very good, or maybe Britten's recording on Decca if you can handle the voice of Peter Pears. Boult is recommended by the Penguin Guide, but I think it's rather dull.

As for the main part of the thread, i.e. underappreciated music The Serenade to Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams is incredibly beautiful (try the Version on Hyperion), and it was nice to read earlier in the thread a recommendation for Finzi's Cello Concerto, a good cheap version of which is on Naxos.

The Hickox/LSO recording of Gerontius is also a good choice, as is Boult's EMI recording of the VW Serenade (a lovely piece, seldom heard in the US).

We happened to listen to that song in my Humanities class .. that probably makes it a standard of the Romantic era.

Thanks .... I'll look into that one. I'm not keen on the Peter Pears 'wobble'!!

I think that early Scoenberg is not appreciated by many people. Most people are aware of his atonal work, but the early stuff is a real stretching of Romanticism until he got to the point of atonal.

Being one of the lables that puts out a lot of the more obscure material, i figure it's worht mentioning that ArkivMusic is having a Naxos sale.

I really like Arkiv, especially when I received a broken disc, they not only replaced it, but paid me several dollars for shipping it back, not bad service for a $6 Naxos disc.

Borders has also been having a Naxos sale as well, but it may be over as most venues don't like to compete with sales.

Tower is has selected titles from DG on sale until July 9. It also has selected titles from Hyperion on sale as well.
