I feel the same way. Although I agree with Oggranak that some appropriately used growling/screaming can really add some punch at the right times.

I'm a big fan of growling/screaming. By cookie monster, I specifically refer to the monotonous grunts of the brutal death/tech death styles.

You make a good point.

Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees. I also always like Richard Butler from Psychedelic Furs. Has a very unique voice. I'll give another vote for Tom Waits too.

When done properly (and this is the key), "unclean" vocals are simply amazing to listen to.

My Favorites:

Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) - Very coherent and great range. To me, he is the benchmark.
Greg Chandler (Esoteric) - Listen to the song "Circle" off the album The Maniacal Vale. That album is a real challenge sometimes, but man, what outstanding range and power.
Rowan London (Virgin Black) - Not the best death vocals, but to sing cleanly like he does and to still pull off deep guttural vocals is not human.
Mikko Kotamäki (Swallow the Sun) - Great screams and good clean vocals.
