I am in a little hole here currently. I am trying to figure out whether it is better to get an used unamped DT880 or used unamped DT770 pro 80 if I could get both at same price (around $100). I read the Buyer's guide (stickied) and I noticed that it said the DT880 REQUIRES an amp while the DT770 only recommends an amp. I did a little research on DT880 and a bunch of people are saying that DT880 sounds a bit muffled unamped or even a little bit 'dry' (http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/any...-dt880-146403/) . Now at $100, it really is a bargaining price considering that it is a DT880 and all.

If I were to get either of them, I would probably use my old external USB soundcard from my OLD Icemat Siberia headset from 4 years back to save some money and wait ~6 months before I buy an amp. Anyways, I used that soundcard with my Denon D1000. Honestly, I didn't think it sounded too bad.

I do lots of gaming so directions are pretty important to me. I never tried the D1000 without the soundcard (due to the sound controller on it) so I am not exactly sure if the soundcard made any noticeable difference sound-wise. The sound controller is pretty much the only reason why I use it to begin with..

If this was your choice, which path would you go? If you think I should wait 6 months and just get a DT880 for now, what amp do you recommend I get? I do not want to spend a lot of money on an amp. The cheaper it is, the better it would be. I really couldn't find much information on amps after a quick search on these forums that would fit my budget (under $50).. Is there any such low-priced amp that is halfway decent? I noticed lots of $200+ amps.. On the other hand, i am sure lots of people use the DT770 unamped.

Thanks.

I say buy both, and you decide. Whatever you don't like, sell. I'm sure there are people willing to pay ~100$ for either of the models.

Well, since you are eventually getting an amp, you might as well get the DT880s if they are the same price. The DT880s won't burst into flames or anything if they are unamped. But, if you can, I second guyx1992.

This is exactly what I was thinking, if you have to choose between the 2 and you plan on getting an amp in the future, then the 880 are the way to go IMHO. And you could always get a cheap portable like a FiiO E5 or something in the mean time.

AD700 is an upgrade over both DT880 and DT770? hm, I haven't seen anybody put the AD700 over them after looking at several reviews. One direct comparison between the 2 pretty much says DT880 is much more detailed ( http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/rev...ad700s-359137/ )

Anyways, I really cannot afford to buy both DT880 and DT770. Besides, I don't know if it is even worth the hassle of selling one of them after a week of trying both of them out. It isn't a bad idea though. Unfortunately, I am just too lazy to go through all that hassle.

I looked at the Littledot website/forum and noticed that they are sold only on eBay. The prices are not that great considering that the cheapest one was $35 and then $25 shipping lol..... Are they the cheapest amps available?

They're really, really different headphones.

The biggest difference is the bass. The DT770's have it in abundance; the DT880's have less.

Also, openness and staging...the 880's are wide as the sky, the 770's much less so...after all, they're closed headphones.

IMHO, you should try them both out without an amp. See which sound you prefer. And later, when you get an amp? You'll be improving the sound you liked in the first place.

Well, the fiio E5 is probably the cheapest, then a cmoy. If you're lucky, someone can make you a Starving Student Millet for about $65.

I just got a response back from the person. He says the 880's are from the late 80's refurbished with new drivers, headbands, earpads, etc. The 770's are refurbished also with new drivers/headbands/earpards/headband pad, etc. Considering the 880's are from the 80's, are they still worth buying over the 770's?

yea the Fiio E5 is like 22 dollars unless the cmoy is cheaper then that. I doubht that it is.
The Fiio E5 is the same amp I using to drive my HFI-780s.

Most people who ownes both the DT770 and the DT880, describes the DT770 as a closed DT880.
Because the DT770 is also bass lean, and has a great soundstage.
Perhaps you are mistaken by the DT770 Pro 80 ohm?
DT770 consumer edition 2005 and the DT77 Pro's are indeed really, really different headphones

edit: sorry, HD_Dude, what you wrote is correct, because OP did mention the Pro 80 ohm (I should've stayed out of this thread, and learn to read :frowning2:

i would get the 880s and wait it out. it's really a brilliant set of headphones, thoroughly impressive and very very comfortable.

there're also plenty of amps to drive it, if you're looking for a cheap one you should try the edge amp, its designed especially for the 880s and are ~100 usd, much less if you manage to find one used because they're sold in bundles with the 880s by jaben

The 880's by a fair margin, especially for gaming and music too. The DT770/80 pro's are nothing special.
