basically my totes is fashionable in berkeley, but can't stand up to the weather (as some other threads have pointed out, the bay area's weather this year seems especially nasty); it's getting slow to pop up, slow to fold down and handles like an old car going up the hill during wind. So i'm looking for something to replace it
requirements: Black, fit in a messenger bag, tuff, and i perfer, but not need, one that closes with a button. so far these are my options:

I believe this is Umbrella High-fi.

http://www.james-smith.co.uk/main.htm

Perhaps some of the chaps in London can testify--I spent a term in London but didn't have the means to buy one at the time. I actually studied about 2 blocks away from the store. I believe it is near Bedford Sq.

I plan to pick one up during my next trip across the pond.

I think they start at 150 quid ($ 260) and go a ways up.

Hey, you asked for more than totes.

I had a London Fog umbrella that stood up for about 10 years. Until I left it at the Adria hotel at yesterday's meet. It wasn't there when I went back today. Not too bad for $25.

try the totes super dome or big top their the same model but have different names. its a medium sized umbrella but stretches out golf size. i find them to be very strong with the bay area rain, never had one flip over or anything like that. once i bought one my whole family wanted one. only thing i hate about it is the push open/close button, i really like the manual type for that stuff.

My solution usually works very well. It's called being a big-goateed, pierced skinhead with an optional-addon of a skullcap!

Water? It wipes away with a cloth!

I have found the best small umbrella that can stand up to the wind to come from the Shed Rain brand. I have two and in the three years I have been using them I have only had three times when one turned inside out because of the massive winds. I am not sure who sells them there but I get them at Bloomingdales in NYC for about 40 bucks and have no complaints.

this one looks to be the winner so far. at least according to the review i just read. Thanks Naris.

I have that umbrella and the smaller one from sharper image. I got them for me and my GF because of the bay area weather too. I don't know if I happened to buy two defective ones or what but they both flipped on me. I'm about to go back and get them replaced just in case. I do like how they feel.
