TRS Jack from Parts Express. I used some 0.060" aluminum for extra support of the jack.
 

Now I can use any custom cable I make with a 3.5mm TRS!!

I'd love to do this, as you know, the cord on the 580 is CRAZY long.
I've modded my Grado's the same way, but I'm unsure how to open up the 580 without breaking it.  How did you get the pad off?

They just pull off by stretching them a little to the outside and then out. There are 3 small phillips screws to take off the speaker portion.

What a nice cable you did, what kind/brand of cable and connector did you use?

I used a simple connector from Radio Shack. They have a few stereo plugs and the most expensive one fit perfectly.

I would pay to have this done. I've never soldered anything in my life, though, maybe this could be a first. The audio plug bent a little bit while inside my phone and I'm only getting sound in the left ear. I figure this might kill several birds with one stone, I could replace the plug (by replacing the entire cable), make the cable detachable, and make the cable several feet shorter. Is there a guide for this, so maybe I could head to radioshack tomorrow and take care of this.
