I’m considering the Ultrasone HFI-2000 as an affordable high quality headphone
About 250 Australian dollars

Mostly classical and jazz/blues
I’m a long term Eric Clapton fan (Me and Mr Johnson at the moment)

Would these headphones be an involving experience, clear soundstage etc ?

Thanks for any advice (I love this forum !)

Hi Knox,

Gosh, I imagine that Australia must be the last place on earth where you can find these new:

I believe that the HFI-2000 were discontinued well over three years ago, so I have no experience of them. But I can highly recommend their successors, the HFI-2200 ULE:

...but unfortunately they are probable about 30% more expensive. (Check with Ultrasone's Oz distributor, East Coast Audio)

That said, however, the HFI-2000s were favorably reviewed at the time:

Pro Audio Review

As far as I can tell, they have the same driver as the 2200s. So, for the price, they just might be worth a punt!

If you decide to go for it, be sure to provide us with your impressions!

I couldn’t find the HFI-2200 ULE in Australia

Headphonic have the HFI-2000G at about 250 Australian dollars

What I want to use them for is to connect to my Denon PMA-1080 amplifier 100w RMS in the video lounge i.e. TV, DVD etc

And

To connect to my Harman Kardon PM 665 amplifier in the sound lounge

Both these amplifiers are high current designs and I intend connecting the headphones directly to the speaker outlets

According to English Hi-Fi magazines this gives best possible sound quality with headphones
They need to be high impedance headphones

Would the HFI-2000G be suitable for this ?

Has this model been reviewed in Head-Fi ?

Would another model at this approximate price point be suitable ?

This is outside my realm of experience, but my instinct says: don't do it!

Besides, English Hi-Fi magazines are well-known to be littered with "bollocks"!

Thanks for the response Dex

Well, that has shot me down in flames !

I’ll take your advice and just plug into the headphone socket

My intention is to eventually get a tube headphone amplifier

After reading that review I’ll see what is available from AKG or Beyerdynamic in my price range
