I once drove 14 hours between Dallas, TX and Phoneix, AZ. I had to take a 15 to 30 minute break every hour. I padded the seat with 1" of foam - otherwise it is murder on my back. I'm 5'7". If you're over 6' you may have problems. The Miata seats are very narrow.

I wish I could put the Honda Del-Sol seats in my Miata.

You can shoe horn a V8 into the Miata for about $8000 out the door. I'd rather go that way than turbo this, muffler that, brakes the other thing. When my 1.6 goes I'll be putting in a V8.

The Miata does not have much headroom either. I was at the Philly auto show last year, and got to sit in the Miata. I'm 6'2", and I was very happy that the convertable top was open because if it wasn't, there was no way I was going to fit in the car. When I got in, the top bar of the windshield was at eye level.

The Miata is probably out if you're above 6'.

If he buys a Miata for open track racing (which is what it sounds like he's going to do), the stock seat will be coming out and will be replaced with a fixed-back race seat (he can choose one that is somewhat comfortable for him), and a roll cage and other safety equipment will be going in. Unless he is running longer endurance races, most races a Miata will compete in will be under an hour, so the comfort issue won't be much of a concern. Most race seats can also be mounted lower to the floor and you'll gain headroom since you'll be lower in the car. I'm 6'1" and 230 lbs, and its a tight fit for me in a Miata, but that will be one of my next car purchases (for racing), for the money it is hard to beat.
