Which is better?

Having a turntable stand that has some sort of vibration isolation platform or a turntable stand that is just downright heavy and massive like say a solid marble pedestal?

It depends on

a) what the stand itself will be standing on. If it's a concrete floor then neither type of stand will pick up all that much vibration to start with whereas if it's a suspended wooden floor then they will be much more prone to pick up frequent vibration and so a wall mounted shelf is usually a better option.

b) The design of the turntable. If it's a high mass modern belt drive design like the Acoustic Solid or pretty much any direct drive or idler drive then the higher mass support the better. Whereas if it's a supsended subchasis like the Linn Sondek then a lightweight rigid stand is usually recomended.
