Tubers: How much have you spent on tubes?
Jun 10, 2007 at 6:51 PM Post #3 of 22
I think I'd spent around $150 to $160 on spare tubes only. I have 2 pairs of each type: 12AX7, 12AU7 and 12AT7. They're from either Mullard, Brimar or RCA. I want to buy spare 300B. Luckily, I sold my 300B power amp before I started collecting these pricey tubes.... :p

I stopped counting when it surpassed my annual income.

Though it's not especially rare nor valuable, I've always had a fondness for the blue glass Arcturus 127.

HA! I think I'd stop counting around there as well!

Which amp do you use your blue glass Arcturus127 in?

oh, and which tube is your pride and joy for which tube amp?

Very little, maybe $5. My X-CanV3 uses 6n1p's and they run about $1.~$3. each.

The 127's are a triode that work ok in a preamp or as a driver tube in an amp. I have most every version of the blue 127's but have always found them to be a little dry in sound. The Sylvania 1929-32 sound better and throw a large stage. I have both the Arcturus and Sylvania in NOS. The Arcturus in the perforated plate do sound the best in the Arcturus 27's, imo.

I lost count on how much I have spent but I have a storage unit packed about 4 by 4 feet and 9 feet high. I know of a guy that has rare tubes of over 1 million in NC but I don't know if he is still alive. He started collecting them in the 60's when they were dirt cheap and somehow he knew they would go up in value.

It is true that large strores of the metal base are being held in Europe and Calif. to wait on the value to go up and up. This is true of some other tubes as well. It is just the way it goes.

As someone who just spent $90 on a pair of Amperex USN-CEP 7308s for my X-Can V3, I strongly urge you to invest in a quality set of tubes. You will be absolutely floored at the difference they make. Next up for me, the Pink Floyd mods...

I've got a TTVJ Portable Millett Hybrid Amp, which uses two Raytheon CK534AX sub-mini tubes. I bought four replacement tubes for that, JIC: $45, with shipping.

I was thinking about buying a SinglePower PPX3 (6CG7), and I saw a package deal on eBay for four Magnavox short-plate 6FQ7's for $20 shipped. I bought them, but I subsequently decided not to go for the PPX3 (at this time).

So: $65 so far - $20 of that for an amp that I don't (yet) own.

Haven't got my amp yet but, so far, about $110.
... luckily the 336i only takes two

I'm hoping that the quality tubes I got will be enough for a long time to come, but you never know...

About $1000 across 3 tube / hybrid amps... my current quad of Mullard xf2 was about $250.
