There's nothing 'wrong' with them. It's just that I find them not 'special,' much like how I feel about GE 6SN7GTB's. A special tube has the ability to lender you with jaws open, saliva dripping, babbling something to yourself like, "Oh my Lord..."

I'm not surprised you like the Kenrads. I prefer them to likes of Tungsol Roundplates and even Sylvania VT231. I see TS RP on sale for like $200-300/pair these days; unless you are super curious and rich, I suggest you try some others instead before forking over this kind of dinero.

My current fave combo is National Union grey glass in tandem with Kenrad Black glass, all with Herbies. Together, these two are like Kate Beckingsale in "Underworld" melted with Ava Gardner. One of them would be all-right

That is exactly how I feel about the way my GE 5998A sounds. I can't wait to find a WE 421A.

Anybody interested in some free tubes? Got an early HD300 going south on me. Tubes are mostly Sylvanias some Jans. Low hours on all. PM me if you're interested.

For the 6AS7 try a National Union. On the HD24/300 it is viewed to be the best. And it does make a difference.

While I disagree with your 6SN7 preferences, your taste in women is impeccable

Ask the manufacturere if the Western Electric 417A is a viable substitute in your amp. It's a great tube which I prefer to any 6AS7/6080.

I've tried the 5998 which works great, and is equivalent to the 421A, should the 417A work as well?

My apologies. I meant to suggest 421A, not 417A (a small, 9 pin WE signal tube). The 421A is not an exact substitute for 6AS7 (nor is the 5998 to either) but they will usually work as close replacements. I'd still ask your amp manufacturer if the 421A works within tolerance of the amp .... just to be safe.

I have, he said that there aren't any safety issues, but that there might be some heater hum, which I haven't experienced.

so they run within spec? or is it just a natural tendency for hum?

All I know is that it has higher gain.

EDIT:
Well, I just ordered a WE421A and a '40's Ken Rad 6SN7GT, I'll post my impressions when I get them.

you are right.

jsut clarified with Craig that the 6AS7 tube is a cathode follower ONLY on the soon to be discontinued hd300. with the hd-25 this tube is run with a transformer plate load.

my bad, people.

I just got a Tungsol 5998. It has the same detail and clarity of the GE, but is more enjoyable, with more impact and a warmer sound, and maybe a little bit more gain.
