I am new to tube amps. I have a MG Head OTL and a MapleTree Audio Ear + on the way.

I have acquired a few tubes while waiting for my amps to arrive. Opinions please?

Long black plate Raytheon 12AX7 late 50's NOS

Siemans Germany 5751 Gold Grade w/Platinum 1% triode

Raytheon 12B4A black plate NOS 1950's matched pair

Brimer England EL84 = 6BQS NOS 1962 matched pair

Those are all very well known and highly respected brands. Made at a time when tubes were king and a country's security depended on having quality gear and also when many of the world's best scientists and engineers worked in this field.

Do yourself a favor and break in both of your amps using the stock tubes so you have a good reference. Then roll in your "good" tubes to see just how good NOS can be. The Mapletree comes with NOS tubes already but I'm sure there's room for improvement. Definitely fun stuff. Enjoy!

I happen to believe, and i think Nik would most certainly back me up here, that the Sovtek 6C45 is quite possibly going to turn out to be the best tube EVER invented. sell your system and get a custom one that supports this Sovtek.

jk -- too easy to pass up
