Goes for the XS708B, it is a step above the LD2+.. IMHO.. If you have more $$$ to spare goes for the Cayin HA-1A..

Does anyone know how I can get US versions any of the China based amps while I'm on my trip? Do some stores sell both versions or will I need to custom order it? Can I arrange for the company to send a US version to my condo in China?

The WooAudio 3 doubles as a preamp. I used it as one for a while. Mine is up for sale now however because I got a passive preamp instead.

For an update:
I am using my LD as a pre amp at the moment and it really warms up the sound of my vintage SS ALOT. the diff is alot more apparent than with phones, to my ear.

I am using my MG Head OTL as a pre-amp in transformer mode. I have also used LD2 as a pre-amp in the past (but prefer the Head.)

Well, I am hoping to spend something like 600 total for a headphone amp/preamp and speaker amp. So I'm looking to spend from 200-300 on the headphone amp.

The Cayin HA-1A makes a nice preamp. And if one of your major decision factors is it has to look cool, The HA-1A with its little lighted porthole window is pretty cool. It also sounds very good.

Ferbose has a nice review.

My HA-1A also drives 98dB speakers to average listening levels.

Mount some high sensitivity ful range speakers to a board, get a nice pair of headphones, the HA-1A, and some bunch of tubes to roll.
