So, I've tried out some of the commonly know "Mid-Fi" cans like the HD650, Mad Dogs and the Q701 but I've not been blow away as yet. I found the mids to be great on all three but the bass (to some extent) and more so the treble to be a bit lacking.

I listen to a variety of genres with my favorite being alternative rock (a lot of Muse in particular) along with some hip hop. Is there anything you guys know of that I should look to try in the <$400 price range?

Thanks!

HE-400 is known for great bass.

Since you are into Muse, I would recommend trying some Grados. Grados have excellent transient response and strong mids that makes a guitar sing and are popular among those that like rock. Have good punchy bass. However, they will not have that deep sub bass extension that some hip hop might benefit from.
