Tricks in pop music sound engineering

What's funny is that the college I attend, which is meant to prepare the student body to be "popular music record producers", should you chose to do this as your career, doesn't at all agree with this practice. However, the very professors that teach us are guilty for doing this to their recordings.

I think it's not the choice of the musicians or the producers, but instead the high-level executives who are responsible for this disaster. I find that the damage is done mostly to "remastered" recordings and alternative (more like corporate) rock/pop. I don't find this as prevalent in hip-hop, surprisingly.
