Hi everyone

I was just curious to see everyone's opinion on my problem

So a month or so ago i had posted a thread asking about the differences of two pairs of headphones and got responses using words like "recessed", "more neutral" and things of that nature.
Now I know what these words mean in terms of sound, but they were using them to compare the two headphones, but I've never touched either pair.
Now that is perfectly fine, but I wanted to know if i could really tell a difference of those factors especially because the highest quality pair of headphones i use on a daily basis are my Astro A40's, and although theyre great, i dont know if they are good enough that i could tell the difference between "recessed mids" and a having a "neutral tone"

For future reference i was asking about the Beyer DT880 and DT770 models (250 ohms; both)

I'm looking into the DT770's right now, but people always say that the DT880's have more "neutral sound", and that the DT770's have "recessed mids".

Coming from my sound experience would that make a huge difference that i should spend an extra ~$90-$100 extra\

Thanks in advance

Personally I would go with the DT990 250 ohm if you're using them for gaming. I've owned many Beyer headphones (T1, T90, DT990-250 ohm, DT880-250 ohm, DT770-600 ohm, and DT770-80 ohm) and the DT990 is the best of the bunch IMO for gaming.

The soundstage is bigger than the 770 and 880, the treble isn't quite as fatiguing as the DT880's is, and the bass-mid bass is better for the grenades and gunshot sounds. I used to have an A30 and 2 pairs of A40s and finally upgraded to the Q701, and then to the 990 for my dedicated gaming headphones. The 990 is better for my taste in music than the 880 too.

And on top of all that, the 990 is CHEAPER! Keep in mind that the 770, 880, and 990 all have the same drivers, it's just what cup style works the best for them in specific circumstances, such as gaming. Personally, I think the 990 is the best, especially for the money.

Here's one fulfilled by Amazon for $159 with a full Beyerdynamic warranty: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0011UB9CQ/ref=dp_olp_refurbished?ie=UTF8&condition=refurbished

You can get them cheaper than that if you wait for the price on Amazon to drop, I got mine for about $150.

Ahh crap sorry i always forget to mention that I want to use the 770/880/990's for music more than gaming. Sorry! but I have read that the DT990's do have a better soundstage and i have been particularly interested in them, but i dont really like the open back design, cuz the Astros are already open back/semi open. Thank you for the feedback though
