Transformer for tripath Amp

Hey JulioCat2,

I purchased a Hlly t-amp ta2022 and i have to say that I was severely disappointed. The sound coming from them was muddled, unfocused and almost unlistenable. My $50 amplifier from dicksmith sounded much better. There was also a loud hissing noise which some people on diyaudio attributed to the pcb layout. Now i'm not saying that the one that you intend on buying will be the same but i just wanted to share my experience with that chip.

I haven't heard the other tripath chips but many of the positive reviews are of the lower watt ones e.g. ta2024.

I purchased the ta2022 on the basis of reviews read about the tripath 2024 and thought that it would be similar but with more power. Unfortunately I don't think that is the case.

Hopefully your experience with the chip is better than mine if you choose to go ahead.

The one that i bought came with a 150W +/- 30V torroid tranny in case you were wondering.

the muddled sound is probably not the TA2022's fault. there is a input stage on the HLLY board, with an opamp of some kind, probably used for pre-amping. That board might be intended for low signal source such as a MP3. I suspect the input stage opamp might be "severely cheap" which severely worsens the overall SQ.

The complain on Class-T SQ is usually "great detail but sharp and edgy", not "muddled".

I think i need to be more specific, i'm a totally newbie, could you please send me some page of a power transformer for that amp kit???

Thanks for the info.

Maultar i buy a tripath Kingrex QS-01 amp recently and it's based on the same ta2022 chip and it sound marvelous, great bass defined highs and a the tube sound of kingrex amps, so i agree with audiocats maybe the Hlly amps it's not well made (the kingrex cost almost 800), i can se no opamp on the pictures of the hlly 90 amp but the kit i intend to buy does have a Nec5532 in a socket so it's perfect for replacemant.

If you don't need the 12v winding, go with the Antek and save yourself $40.00 on the shipping. Anteks are great and he does a great job serving the DIY market.

So then i don't need to feed 12 and 24 volt to the kit??? as i said i'm a totally newbie

Ooops, sorry my bad. I should have looked at the amp itself, I saw a post for the Antek and assumed. Anyway if you want to go with the one you found on eBay it will do the job, can't speak to the quality as I have not used them. You can get a 22v and a 12v traffo from Antek for $39.00 and their shipping is way less and I can personally vouch for the quality as I use them all the time. YMMV

Thanks a lot friends. I'm from Mexico, so i think i'll buy the 2 trafos one 12 v and one 24v from Antek, i'm going to use the other 12V out to a speaker protection kit.

Another question, the 24 V trafo has 2 24 V outputs, so it has 2 24v-0 outputs, so how does the transformer must be coneceted to the amp if it has 24v-0-24v.

Yes i know, i'm a total joke DIY.
