Traditional Japanese Music

If you want taiko (traditional drums) performances try Kodo. I went to one of their performances when they were in Sendai during their "One Earth Tour" and even if the Tokyo performance was probably grander (don't know, wasn't at that one) it was the first time I heard them live. It was mind blowing. Can't explain but that performance is probably the most engaging one I've ever experienced. Their albums are listed on sa-cd.net (among others), I believe.

I have a CD called Gujo Odori (from a village called Gujo Hachiman) from the bon festival but I'm not sure it's available over the net. Try doing a search for "bon odori" and something of interest might show up.

For the real treat look up Tsugaru jamisen, which is kind of "modern" folk music. It's played on shamisen (duh

) and has a upbeat, freestyle, almost rock sounding feel to it. There are even two gifted brothers, Yoshida Brothers/Yoshida Kyoudai whose albums are a mix of their tsugaru jamisen performance with modern style sound.

Happy hunting!

Well-recorded taiko is a great way to make your planars sing.
