Hey guys. I recently replaced some decent but low end logitech powered speakers with an old AV receiver and passive JBLs for my computer. I'm pleased with instruments and channels coming in more separate. I'm driving it right off my laptop's mediocre at best soundcard; will I pick up any detail if I get a low end USB DAC? The speakers may be a bottleneck with only 8ohm impedance.

From a laptops headphone out ? Yes, I'd expect to hear a fairly decent improvement in most cases from an external dac... and you really don't have to break the bank to get good results... maybe something like the very inexpensive but well regarded, asynchronus hifimediy sabre u2?
