My old Total Airhead had been sitting in a drawer for quite a while (over a year I think) because the volume potentiometer was busted.
Yesterday while looking for my GPS's data cable I noticed that our old (and also busted, it was buried in a closet) VCR had a nice little row of pots for setting L and R record levels, sharpness, and headphone volume. I disassembled it and found that all the pots were Alps, single channel, and that the only two that has the same resistance were the record level pots, both were 20k audio taper.
The pot in my TA was a 50k stereo one, but since I didn't have any money to go get a proper replacement I decided to just stick 'em in and see what happened.
Turns out they seem to work just fine, and as a side effect I've now got a primitive balance control.
Anyone know any possible negative side effects of this? There's no DC going through the pot so that's not a problem, and it doesn't seem to have any negative effect on the sound quality.
