I was under the impression that both 3950 and 3960 are under production. Are they different model years?

The reason I ask is that Toshiba's web site doesn't list the 3950. Only the 3960.

But it shouldn't matter, still a great price/performance ratio. There are some differences on the inside (from what I understand, one circuit board instead of two), but you can still do all the popular 3950 mods to the 3960.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I should hunt for a 3950 on Ebay

I just ordered 3960 at Amazon.com for $60. 3950 is about the same price.

If you want more info of 3950, you can "search" the Toshiba website.

Thanks for the tip. I looked over Toshiba's web page. i've added a headphone amplifier to my used products search. If I can get a good amp for under $50 I'll probably end up with the Toshiba and I'll eventually modify it. I'm strongly onsidering a used Airhead

Time will tell I suppose.

From what I've read, the 3950 is preferable. It has a bigger remote, switchable display (track/time), and metal chassis (which provides good shielding). The 3960 has a plastic chassis and some internal hacks to get around the fact that it has no chassis shielding the components.

The mods can be made to either model, though.

I ordered a 3950 from TechDepot.com last night and it shipped out today. They had 96 units in stock at the time, but apparently they have sold out, as they are now showing 0 in stock. Here's the link if anyone is interested. http://www.techdepot.com/product.asp?productid=1799449

Best Buy has the 3960 for $69.99 right now. The Best Buy in my city has a ton in stock.
