Hi, my name is Peter and I joined Head-fi yesterday. I was eager to post a thread or two but all these do's and don'ts make the forum intimidating.
At the moment I am too wary of breaking a rule and bring banned to post anything.
Can someone please convince me this forum is not scary at all?
(If this post gets me banned then so be it).
This forum isn't scary! (at least not in the way you think )
Just stay clear of posting political content and stay polite, you'll be fine.
And keep in mind this forum is above all an advertising platform, so don't attack the sponsors.
The Music subforum and DIY subforum are not scary at all, as are most other subforums.
In the Sound Science subforum you can expect to get challenged if you advocate subjective perceptions of sound as the arbiter of fidelity, and fail to comprehend (or worse, acknowledge) the difference between measurable sound and sound reproduction on the one hand vs. the psychoacoustic perception of sound on the other hand.
Some threads in the Cables, Power, Tweaks, Speakers, Accessories (DBT-Free Forum) IMO can get a bit weird/silly, with some folks stuffing bags of crystals and salt in power outlets to fine-tune their system. Let them be and don't try to argue about the science of sound there; it won't be welcome.
Finally, many people here approach this hobby (for some indeed a profession) with different objectives, so be cognisant of that in any arguments; your idea of enjoying music & HiFi may not be the same as someone else's.

This is unironically arguably one of the most welcoming and friendly communities I’ve been apart of. Sure if you wander into science sound forum unprepared you might feel a little attacked but they’re just passionate lol. But I mean in my experience people are very willing to answer questions and everyone is just hear to discuss the hobby we all share. I know I’ve had my fair share of uhhhh maybe somewhat controversial comments recently but even the mods are friendly and respectful and seemingly just want to keep this a good space for people to talk gear or music or what have you. I mean heck there’s even a dedicated thread for sharing pics of your cat. It’s really a nice place to be.
