There are so many genre's out there these days that I'm totally confused. Indie, Rock, Punk, Metal, Heavy metal, etc etc. Right now my music collection only has Rock, Pop, Rap, Soundtrack, and Raggae. I want to have a more specific genre, problem is I'm not even sure what all these genre's mean. Is there a site or something that tells you what genre a certain band/album falls under? That would make organizing my music much easier!

I don't think you should really be that worried about what genre a certain band is "supposed" to fall under. When I rip an album, I give it a genre that I personally feel fits with the general sound. Sometimes, I even end up creating genres that probably don't exist outside of my computer.

However, if you're really adamant about following some strict guideline, AMG has everything neatly categorized.

Unless you have a massive collection within one genre, I'd just stick to the general genres. The more specific you go, the more you fall into "square peg in a round hole" syndrome trying to figure out how to categorize artists. Subgenres may be useful in trying to guess whether you might like a new group, but once you own the CD and know what it sounds like it is worthless to try to categorize it in such a way.

I try and keep the number of genres to a minimum - that makes for more interesting random play when I select a specific genre (or make a playlist with 2 or 3 genres). So I only have:

Rock/Pop
Hardcore/Punk/Metal
Classic Rock
Hip-Hop/Electronica/DJ/Techno
Reggae/Dub/Ska
Jazz/Latin Jazz/Fusion
Funk/Soul/R&B
Country/Bluegrass/Folk/American Roots
International
Classical

That results in a lot of pigeon-holing, but I only need the genre tag for random listening as above.
