Tomahawk...whats yer level?

All those at higher clock either use different, less powerful DAPs, or just like louder music ^.^

(I don't have the t-hawk, and I use the volume on my mp3 player as low as possible, which happens to be around 9-10 with my um2, out of the 22 ticks possible).

I am probably the most insane TH user here. On high gain with my 100 Ohm Ety ER-4S, 12PM to 1PM. When listening to My Bloody Valentine (which need high volume) it's even 2.30PM

really? that is barely on.....if I turn my volume knob completely off, its in the 7:00 position....7:30 would basically be at the first hashmark

Yep, around first hashmark. I listen at very low volume levels and find that plenty loud for me in quiet environments.

Currently I am using an iModded iPod to feed the Tomahawk using an IC made by Fitz (silver plated copper) terminated in neutrik 1/8" mini. The cans are AKG K501 and the gain is set to high on the Tomahwak. The volume is between 8:30 and 9:00

Guys.... how does this thread make any sense if you're not qualifying how hot the source is?

How is this for some quantitative measurements?

I don't ever go past the 9'oclock position on the Tomahawk volume knob when driving my Grados (MS-2i, RS-1, PS-1). I have the gain switch set to low. My Entech DAC has a very hot output (don't have a measurement available, but it is quite hot - trust me).

At the 9'oclock position on the Tomahawk knob, on low gain, driving my PS-1s, I took a measurement with my SPL meter. The measurement took place over 199 second time period. I used a song that was recorded pretty hot - not to levels of clipping, but a very hot song nonetheless. The average DB level during that time was 69db. The highest peak during that time was 75db.

I take my hearing very seriously, and so I finally broke down and purchased an SPL meter to make sure that I was listening at or below 75dbs. I think every Headphone enthusiast or Audio geek should be required to own an SPL.

So in summary, my answer is: With PS-1s on my rig, 9'oclock or below on the Tomahawk volume knob, with the gain switch on low - which means I am listening at or below 75dbs.

With my Shure 500s I set the volume between 7 and 8 o'clock and the gain is low. With my Sennheiser 565s I set the volume between 8 and 10 o'clock and the gain is high. I'm using the dock-out on my iPod and the line-out on my PCDP.

When I posted my first response, my TH had very little time on it. I have left it burning in 24/7 since then and I find that the sound has developed nicely. I am now at 8:00 low gain and get the nice full sound that I was getting previously on high gain.

Anything much past 9 is when I really need motivating.
Normally ~8ish.

Now I want a PRII to compare!!

Are most of you people who turn past 9 with IEMs deaf or something? I can't stand my SF5pro over 7:30.. which is like 0.1mm from 0 with lowgain.

For headphones, I normally don't go past 8:00 with Audio-technicas, except for my Grado 325 which I hit 8:30-9 in noisy places.
