Tivoli CD player NOW OUT

Sep 17, 2002 at 8:15 PM Post #2 of 37
I recently received the Tivoli Model 2 radio. It's simply incredible. Without the antennae it's a little iffy, but with the antennae attached, it just pulls in stations that I didn't even know existed! Suffice to say, I listen to the radio way, way more then I ever did in my life...because I actually get good reception now!

Vert, isn't it great? I've been raving about this thing since I first heard it. Didn't you also buy 2 channel's Model One?

That CD player looks sweet. I wonder how good it is? The fact that they made the system modular means that people like us who already have a Model Two can just buy the CD module. Very cool.

Here's the kicker: if it's a good CD player, it would make the *perfect* headphone system source, since it will have to connect to the Model Two via line-out.

I can't wait to see/hear one of these in person. Picture:

I just heard the model 1 today. It came in the mail this morning. It is for my dad as he is an AM radio buff. This little thing is INCREDIBLE and I will be buying one for myself very very soon. The sound is very good. Not AMAZING but very good. The real gem is the tuner. Hands down this is the best tuner I have ever used. There is a HAM radio operator across the street from me and he has an industrial grade bugger in his basement that when not connected to his beast outside, can't pick up stations like the model one. He was so amazed today he wants to buy one.

HIGHLY recommended. Like Vert said...it GETS you to listen to the radio.

I actually don't use the Model 2 by itself...rather I stashed away the right speaker, and just use the main unit line out as a tuner for my speaker system. Obviously the Tivoli's speakers just don't compare to the Titus.

Like Zanth said, the Tivoli's ok, as long as you keep the volume relatively low. Trying to get room filling sound quickly overloads their bass ports, and you end up with very boxy bass and harsh highs. Overall I already see the intention behind the Tivoli was to curve the sound so that it'd be on the forgiving, warm side.

But yeah, I'm in radio heaven combining the tuner with my speaker system...radio has never sounded so clear!

From the FAQ:
" 7. Can I connect external speakers to the Model One?
Yes, if they are the self-powered variety. However, the sound will be mono even if using two speakers."

That was yet another reason I wanted the Model 2 over the Model 1, other than for the Model 2's looks. I believe the new PAL sports a stereo output jack, might want to check that out if you want a stereo output but don't want the 2nd speaker of the Model 2.

From the PAL description:
"Also on tap is an auxiliary input to connect a CD, MP3 player, or other device, and a stereo headphone output for private listening (headphones not included), as a recording output, or to use the PAL as a high-quality outboard tuner."

Yeah, looks like that's what you need, pig.

The only thing that might be a problem is that one output jack on the PAL is used as the output for headphones as well as a line out. There might be impedance matching or loudness problems with a full blown rig. The Model 2 has a dedicated line out, and dedicated headphone jack.

I bought a Model 2 to play with several months ago. Although it does sound good, especially for near field listening, it will not fill a room. It had a great soundstage and a nice warm sound to it. I've tried the line input with my pmdp and it works well.

In the end, I gave it to my mom and got an separate tuner for my system. She likes the way the look. I wish I had tried it as a desktop/computer speakers. I think that may work very well.

I've got a Model One next to my bed, and a PAL for just anywhere. I like to take the PAL out on the patio in the morning for coffee. Any of these products are fine in my book!

darkclouds, how loud do you listen?

Vert, I agree with you about the sound EQ they use -- I mentioned that in my review of the Model Two I did last fall. It's clearly intended to produce a warm, musical, non-fatiguing sound. Which is generally perfect for FM radio.

That said, I hooked my PCDP up to the line-in jack and it makes a great mini-system (better than all but the very good minisystems on the market).

Rick, I finally got to audition the PAL today. It's *smaller* that I expected! It's tiny! But the sound is excellent; in fact, because of the smaller speaker and fully closed enclosure (as oppsed to the ported design on the Model One/Two), it's less "chesty" or boomy in the upper bass. It also plays surprisingly loud for it's size. I'm definitely going to pick one up soon. Perfect as a shower radio and one you can take on picnics, camping, etc.

Vert's right about the PAL -- it's a headphone out, not a line-out. But it does have a line-in jack for hooking up a CD player (PCDP, for example).

Finally, I called Tivoli today about the CD unit. It has L/R RCA line-outs on the back, and an adapter will be included to hook it up to the Model Two or PAL. They'll have info up on the Tivoli site in about 1-2 weeks, and will start shipping them in 3-4 weeks.
