First of all, I apologize if this has been discussed before. I searched for it but failed to find anything exactly like this mod I've done so I thought I'd share it in case it may be useful for someone.
Next, I have another thing to apologize for - Regrettably, I don't have a camera and I'll not be able to provide pictures but fortunately, it's a pretty simple mod and I'll do my best to describe it without being confusing.
A few days ago, I bought a cheap pair of Altec Lansing MHP136 earphones from Wally World. They were cheap enough and I liked the wood housing. Unfortunately, as with most in ear phones I've tried, I had a really hard time getting a good seal with the supplied tips. I believe they are soft silicone. Look them up on Amazon to see a good picture of the stock tips.
So I had an idea. What if I could stuff something under the silicone to help it seal better? First, I tried foam from some earplugs and it worked OK but because that stuff is springy, it constantly tries to swell back to it's original shape. This makes it a little fatiguing to have in your ears for any real period of time.
Then, I had an idea. Putty. I have some putty I bought for another project. I believe you guys call it Blu-Tack on here. Mine isn't the official Blu-Tack brand but any brand should do as long is it doesn't have any harch chemicals in it.
So I took a little eyeglass screwdriver and stuffed this stuff down into the space between the sound tube and the silicone part until it was pretty filled out and even all around.
The result? Better than I expected. Not only does it conform to the ear canal but when you get the seal you're trying for, it stays at that size and doesn't try to swell back out and put pressure on your ear canals.
The seal still tends to get a little screwed up after a while (especially if I move around a lot) but it's way better than anything else I've tried. It also tightens up the bass and gets rid of most of the harsh sound these earphones had stock .
If you have a cheap pair of 'phones around and are curious, give this a try.
I'd also be interested to know if anyone knows of threads with similar mods.
