Looking for a good closed can to compliment my HD-595s, is this a good way to go? I would be listening to them mostly through my EMU 0404-USB but also through my Zune.

Any big pitfalls that you can think of?

Is there a better closed can to get for the price?

Is $199 at Guitar Center a good price?

Thanks much,

For closed headphones, I prefer the AKG K271S. It's has a generally more refined sound and the bass is never overpowering. The current price at Amazon.com, for example, is extremely good, and makes it a better value than the DT770/80 Pro in my opinion.

I think it depends how much you like bass. If you love lots of bass, jump on the Beyers, and you can get them for around $60 cheaper new on eBay.

Also, if you're listening to them straight out of your zune, they may sound very underpowered. I was surprised at how bad they sounded straight out of a third gen iPod compared to straight out of my laptop, but I don't know how the more recent mp3 players can power them.

the 80ohm 770 sound good straight out of an ipod, but they sound slighty better amped.
the beyers are great with electronic music and disco!

A few moths ago I was in the same boat as you (I owned a pair of HD595's and a total bithead) I was looking for something both closed and a littler more bassy then my HD595's. I wanted something to better complement NIN and Tool two of my favorite bands. I ended up going with a pair of DT770's and immediately got buyers remorse. First off, IMO the HD595's are much better HP's then the DT770's so you end up getting a lesser phone then you have now and it shows. IMO the DT770's bass was overpowering the mids were too recessed and the highs were grainy. Although I will point out that they were fun to watch movies with. If you look around here on the forums you will find other great closed phones that should be an upgrade from the HD595's such as the Ultrasone HFI-780, Denon AH-D2000's and the Audio-Technica ATH-A900.

Ooh those ATH-A900s look quite nice. How is the isolation on them? Best price I've been able to find (non-ebay) is $220 at AudioCubes. Is that about right?
