Thinking about DT-770s

Thanks for all the helpful comments, but I have a few questions...

First of all, I actually did try out the (non-pro) 250 ohm version in person at B&H, and it sounded extremely dull and quiet without amp. Also, I was told the pro version (250 or 80) wasn't adjustable, but I guess that was wrong (though I am curious - what's the difference between the pro and non-pro then?)

The KSC75 are somewhat intriguing, but I dislike clip on and was hoping for something circumaural if possible, which is what made the HD201s so tempting. I've heard (pretty far and wide) that they're extremely decent considering their rock bottom price. Are they really that bad?

Finally, if I do go the open route for a home pair of headphones, does anyone have any particular recommendations for open, circumaural headphones under 120? The K301s look very decent (and notoriously comfortable), and reviews generally seem to be pretty favorable.

P.S. If I can get the DT770 Pro/80s for $140 + shipping like gravitas says, I don't think I can possibly refuse that.

P.P.S. Thank you all infinitely for dealing with my inexperience/crappy decision making skills so perfectly

Senn HD555 maybe? Good all around can, but I think the 770 is better suited for the type of music you mostly listen to. HD555 doesn't have heavy bass on tap that is fun to hear with hiphop/techno.

I'm not sure, but some have said the DT770 is the same as the DT770pro (I think it was beyerdynamic), just in a different enclosure. Other's have said there are differences in sound, but small.

Also, carful with the HD201, HD202, HD457, HD497. They are not "ture" circumaural headphones. They barely fit around the ears, but still rest on them. As for how they sound, there are some people who bought them and were very dissapointed by them ( see here: http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=192052 ). I've never heard the lower models, although I have heard the HD497 (the only one without bloated bass many say....). My HD497 (at ~60$) was just slightly more detailed then the KSC75, while the KSC75 was more balanced. I would recommend the HD497 if it was for around 30$us, but 60$ is steep. They were built decently though.

If you dislike clip on, then pass on the KSC75. There is of course the Koss Sporta Pro (20$) and Porta Pro (36$) to think about as well. That's could be for a different thread though, the HD201 VS koss sporta/prota pro.

I've had my DT770Pro 250 ohm version for over a year now, and I got them from B&H to California without any problems. Just to echo what others are saying, yes, the headband is adjustable, and no, amplification is not absolutely required. I use them for listening to mainly electronic/DJ music, and I think that you're going to love them for that. For hip-hop, the mids/vocals may be slightly recessed, but not annoyingly so. I've also compared the 250 ohm version with the 80 ohm version (my brother has DT770Pro 80 ohms), and while clearly the 80s are easier to drive, to me the bass was more full/rich on the 250 ohm version. For the type of music you're proposing and your budget, I'd recommend the DT770Pros, 250 ohm version.

Thanks for all the continued feedback as always, and I have a little update: I decided that ultimately I'll be much happier with the DT770s than with any other (feasible) alternative, so I made a $135 offer on the auction gravitas linked. I just hope he'll accept it as he did with gravitas'... cause that's an awesome price.

Anyways, here's hoping!

Yep, I've had mine for about a month now. Powered by a Total Bithead, I am one HAPPY guy! They are, seriously, everything I want and don't want in a full-size can. Between the DT770/80, SuperFiPro5, and Total Bithead, I have found my personal headphone heaven. Now my source (4G Ipod) just needs upgrading...
