So, I have a budget of around $160-180, and I'm looking for a set of good phones to upgrade from my quite mediocre MDR-V300s. I'm looking for sturdy, circum-aural, closed cans, and I mostly listen to electronic/hip-hop. As you can see, Beyerdynamic's DT-770s are pretty much perfect for me.

The cheapest (actually only place) I can find them (lots of comparison shopping engine things) is at B&H Photo-Video (link) for $180. Also, those are the 250 ohm impedence version (they also come in an 80), meaning I would need to use amplification all the time (not really convenient).

My questions are:
1. Does anyone know of a place that would have the 80 ohm version? (hopefully a little cheaper too, the headphonereviews.org site says street price is $150. I know that the pro version is slightly cheaper, but I've tried them and the sizing is a little tight... and they're the 250 ohm version as well)
2. Does anyone think there are a better set of phones for me?

Thanks a lot!

I think ebay has the 80 ohm version for the prices you're looking for. Give it a check

ebay has very good prices, but as far as I can tell only the pro version (though yes, 80 ohms), which I think might be a little small, as well as unadjustable. I may go with them anyways, but I'd like to get the non-pro version if possible. From what I understand they're exactly the same phones, just with an adjustable headband and slightly less squeezing pressure (I'm sure there's a better word for that but I don't know it)

I have the dt770/80 pro edition it does have an adjustable headband, hehe=)

I'd say they are medium sized, and very very tough in build quality. I already dropped them once, no problem, lol. I had my koss r80 $40 headphones break on me without my ever dropping them on the floor, not even ONCE! haha

I'm about to play some bf2 with the underwater reverberation effect on, as I've just discovered that this setting makes the bass on these cans SICK

(don't mind the little dt770 promotion here, lol;p)

I'll warn you now though, even though you'll get great @$$ bass and a good soundstage with the dt770/80's, you'll also get what many here consider to be recessed mids. I first heard it for myself when I was listening to a dmx song. It sounded alright with nothing out of place with stock equalizer settings, but when I gave the rock pre-set eq setting a try, dmx sounded MUCH fuller and normal(normal for him anyway, lol). So if you're really keen on voices, take that into consideration

An amp may help out the mids, though I do not know how much, hehe=)

The 770/80pro's have an adjustable headband as well. They also are supposed to sound better than the 770/250. Do you have a guitar center near you. You can try the 80's out there. The headband will loosen up with time or you can strech it out if necessary. Headphones don't get much more comfortable than these.

Also you should be able to talk guitar center down to around $150.00.

There is a guitar center very close to me, but I'm curious about the talking them down in price bit... how exactly do you go about that? Especially since going down to $150 would be shaving off a quarter of their price! (they retail there for $200) I've never haggled with retail before, as stupid as I feel saying that.

I got mine on the day of a sale so I didn't have to haggle. I got lucky.
I would say tell them you can get them for a better price online and ask if they will lower it to $150.

You could try printing this out and showing it to them. Shipping vs. tax should work out to about the same, but you could get immediate gratification at the guitar center and also listen before you buy

Thanks a lot, everyone! Unfortunately I don't *quite* have the money yet (need to wait for the birthday to come around), so it will still be a few days. I can't wait

Meier has a great selection, but the price is a little high and out of my range.

So, I've also come up with a possible alternative. I use headphones in 2 places; at home for music creation and just listening and then at school/on the train/etc. Because I'm a little hesitant to carry around $150+ cans, I'm thinking about going for the (shockingly well reviewed) HD-201s ($17.75 from amazon) for portable use and then getting a set of open cans for use at home. That way, I can spend about the same or even less money and (I think) get an even better set of phones for home use. I think I'll likely go for this option because it just makes more sense (plus who can resist starting a little headphones collection!).

The AKG K-301 XXLs ($100, also from amazon) look pretty awesome to me, but I'm not completely set on those yet.

fuzzycasserole, after reading this thread, I can tell you have in no way made up your mind on anything, and are open to about anything. To people like this, I recommend you go and try out as many high end headphones as you can (to save yourself from a lot of dissapointments).

Having said that, there are a few more things I would like to touch upon.
First off, the one you linked to on the B&H photo is not the main one.
This is the main one for 10$ less: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...goryNavigation

Next, to who ever told you the 250ohm version does not work without amplification............... it's not true. To who ever told you the 250ohm version doesn't have an adjustible headband....... they are wrong with that as well (it does, and it is actually quite a big can).
You also mentioned that you worry about the clamp force. Don't go by what the beyerdynamic site says. These don't have much of a clamp force, but enough to keep them on your head securly. Just right. These are some of the most comfortable headphones I've ever used.

guitarcenter has the 80ohm version as others have said here. You can also check the for sale forum and see if anyone is selling theirs (if you don't mind used).

Next. I would highly recommend these for what you want to use them for. I think these are a great deal at 170$us. If you have a local guitar center, ask to try out their high end headphones. I would advise against getting the HD201 or HD202 if you want sound quality. If you want a beat around portable, check out the Koss KSC75 at 12$us (if you like clip on design).

Either way, I'de be interested to hear what you end up getting.

~Hope this helps

Check this ebay sale. IIRC correctly, I offered $135 and they took it. If it wasn't $135 it was $140...but no more.
