It always amazes me how the minutest whiff of an isolated substance can bring up a vivid recollection of an entire and complex event including the proper response to reply to that particular situation.

Oboy, a philosophical discussion!

One technical philosophical move is to distinguish "propositional" thought from non-propositional thought. The first requires something like a human language, the second not. It is plausible (though controversial) to say that some infra-human species have non-propositional thought. And if one accepts that, it seems to follow that SOME human thought is also non-propositional.
