Thats cool. But unless FiiO can provide the device with a 512gb-1tb msata then id rather them ship it empty. Even then, I'd only like it to come with storage if it ends up being as cheap as or cheaper than if FiiO were to sell it empty and I had to buy the storage drive myself.

We already have decision about mSATA but here is something more to share with you

1, a builded in 512gb memory will be very high cost for a DAP, but if you buy a 512g disk/SD card, it will be very very cheap,  cause for mSATA/SD card, it is sold in huge quantity so very small profit is enough in business.

2, unless you ship the DAP empty without the mSATA disk, otherwise the cost will be higher than a builded in flash ( flash memory chips ared soldered on the PCB ).

so let's go ahead with 2 SD slot and I think it is big enough for 99% customer at very reasonable price .

I think he's saying it's too expensive to include mSata so they are going with just 2 SD slots.

@JamesFiiO

I am not sure if you are now heading towards bringing out a new Dap with lesser dac and amp, As I failed to follow the middle pages of this thread when the direction started veering towards such a device. As my interest is a product that is a pure Portable Transport........

May I PM you, James?

it is not necessary !  in fact, you can regard it as  DAP which designed for bundle.  a pure transport will limited the market and maybe someone will make it and this has been explained in the past pages.

Just to add more woes to your already full "Request List Box"

Has support for Meridian MQA be considered @JamesFiiO

EDIT: My 2 cents worth on the inbuilt storage (or not) I have always been happy to accept minimal inbuilt storage along the lines of 32Gb internal flash for the system UI and users own info along with 2 full SD card slots, also happy with just the 2 full SD card slots with an aim to keep costs down.

Good point about internal storage. A lot of the database issues plaguing the X players I think could be cured if they had enough on board ram (and a faster SoC). I doubt 32gb is necessary, just a couple GB should be plenty to handle a database, UI any buffering necessary.

Because you've now decided you have absolutely no intention of making a transport, don't you think the thread title should be changed, James?

Thats rather tongue in cheek. Its still going to be an excellent transport. You will be able to carry up to 512gb in each slot, which is more than the total max capacity for any other fiio dap. But you get 2 of them. Besides having the highest capacity, it will also easily be the highest value of storage per dollar for the end user once all is said and done.

Including a basic, reasonable dac and amp doesnt make it less of a device, it makes it more of a device because it adds functionality *without sacrificing size, cost, or battery life as a transport*

...While still managing to provide excellent connectivity to external DACs/Amps as required or desired...

I can live with an internal DAC/Amp functionality as long as the provisions are made properly manage a music library, create and use playlists, and get the bit perfect data to whatever external audio equipment I want.
So, it seems we have a transport with on-board music monitoring capability...at least that's how I can rationalize it...

Totally! The DAC/AMP functionality could be integrated, for those who want to have it, by adding a module pretty much along the same lines as the different amp module for the X7. This add-on DAC/AMP could even come in different versions, with different specs at different price levels.
