I have been using Etymotic 4S's for many years along with a XIN amp and an old RIO Karma. At the time I purchased the Ety's there really was nothing else. Now I see that there are many other options. Before I spend $94 to repair the Ety's I would like to know if there is something better sounding out there.

I am also contemplating replacing my RIO Karma with a Cowon J3 and maybe not using the amp. I would appreciate any comments as to whether or not I should repair the Ety's keeping in mind that I may not want to continue using the XIN amp. What other earphones are worth considering for use with and without an amp?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Depending on what sound signature you prefer I would suggest trying a pair of Brainwavz M2 with Comply T-400 foam tips.  The mediums worked best for me.  The earphones are $75 max and the Comply T-400 foam tips are $15 for 3-pairs.

Here are the charts for comparison:

I really enjoy the M2 especially at its price point.  If they break you do not miss your $75 as much as you would with a more expensive IEM.
