How you made the jump from Shins to Bloc Party, I'll never know...

The band that I think most sounds like The Shins would be the New Pornographers, and to a slightly lesser extent, the CD released by their lead singer, A.C. Newman. I'm pretty sure The Shins are coming out with a new LP in the next 6 months.

I'm really confused by some of the recommendations some have made here. Spoon? Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party? Modest Mouse!? I like those bands, but IMO they sound nothing like The Shins.

You should first look at Rogue Wave and their LP "Out of the Shadow." You won't be disappointed, it sounds very much like The Shins.

Then look into some work by the Elephant 6 Collective (Apples in Stereo, Of Montreal, The Olivia Tremor Control, etc.), The Decemberists, and The Oranges Band.

A Shins fan will probably like the Decemberists, but Olivia Tremor Control? I don't hear much of a similarity between those two.

I'm a Shins fan and I like OTC.

I can see what you're saying, but they're both highly influenced by 60's pop and psychedelia of The Beach Boys. The Shins lean more into the sunny 60's guitar pop side, but the idea for James Mercer to form the Shins is traced directly to the OTC believe it or not. He was drawn to the Elephant 6 Collective sound while he was in Flake and decided to make a side project (The Shins) reflecting that. If you listen to the interview he did on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic he says this and mentions OTC. The Shins are like an easier-to-digest accessible version of the bands in Elephant 6.

But like I said, Rogue Wave is probably more of what indiegirl is looking for. If she wants to dig deeper than check out the other bands.

Good post, Borat.

I don't listen to the Shins, but I have alot of Elf Power, OTC, and some Apples in Stereo. I also like the Green Pajamas, who sound somewhat like the Elepant 6 bands, IMHO. I'm wondering if that will work for indiegirl89.

Depends a little on what you like most about them. I personally really enjoy when they get a little bit progressive in songs like "Saint Simon". But I also love the vulnerable side that comes out in songs like "Young Pilgrims", or the "New Slang" hit from the first one. But both albums are pretty solid and fun listens. Broken Social Scene has some of that same sound, but they're just a bit more eclectic. If you don't mind going back a few years, give a listen to the Kinks Village Green album, or one of the best of package deals. Some of that same flair shows up in the Super Furry Animals. In fact, I thought there was a lot of similarities between the SFA Phantom Power and The Shins Chutes Too Narrow. Both easily in my 2003 top 10 (along with the Broken Social Scene). The Moonbabies from Sweden is a favorite of mine and share some of that eclectic Beatles sound. The Orange Billboard from last year was really nice, as was their debut which leaned a little closer to Yo La Tengo, and if you don't know Yo La Tengo, well, what can I say. Electr-o-pura and I Can Hear The Heart ... are both indie classics to me. One of my favorite listens that has been stuck in my player and probably shown up around here in my recent blabberings, is the 1995 Waterpistol by Shack (actually recorded n 1992). Great stuff, right up there with that classic debut from The La's and that other one from the Stone Roses. Yeah, there's a hundred more on the tips of my fingers, but I'll leave you with a must hear for a fellow Shins and DCFC fan, get to the amazon.com marketplace or some other used CD source and beg, borrow, or steal a copy of Richard Davies Telegraph. Really

i love the postal service, dcfc, broken social, yo la tengo etc etc.. but they sound nothing like the shins (minus a song or two between all these guys). i love the shins, been a fan for years and the only thing ive ever heard that sounded remotely similar were a couple syd barret solo tracks or obscure tracks from misc late 60's bands.

but if you do find anything, lemme know. no doubt you'll probably like most of the stuff listed here.... but it doesnt sound like the shins =)

my apologies - i should have been clearer: imo while some of these bands sound nothing like The Shins, all of them give me a similar 'vibe' when i listen to them.

In other words, dissimilar styles, but imo similar spirit.
