Nice looking adapters! Stainless steel?
Well you know how things go with me…. I suggest something and the wonderful folks such as yourself make it happen 🙂 My conversation with Deyan went something like this “can you make me metal base adapters?” After a bit of trial and error Deyan said:
Normal aluminum isn't up to the job. This one is from aircraft aluminum. Hopefully this is what you need.

Is anyone familiar with differences between the US production Tung-sol 6550 2nd gen vs 3rd gen? 3rd gen seems to be a chunk cheaper, is there a huge sonic difference between them?

I'd say get what you can. These Tung Sol 6550 1960s are great sounding tubes. I put them on par with my GEC KT88.

Sylvania VT-107A driving GEC KT-88 in Euforia AE, out to my newly acquired Focal Utopia 2022. Sandy Denny sang "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" directly into my ears and brain, then Chopin's Ballade #3 was performed in my den. Who knew such musical bliss was possible, even on a Saturday night!?!

Lory, congrats on the Focal Utopia 2022. :beerchug: Life's all about good music. :)
Thanks Matt. Your passion for great sound gear in service of great music is inspiring as well. Enjoy!

Thanks Lory. Your too kind. It's been a long journey. The fact that I'm getting the Darkvoice 336se means that I have come full circle. I can retire now.

Thank you very much for the headsup, I had no basis to compare 6550 with as I only have the stock Shuguang 6550 pair, and it was worth the gamble.

This is definitely what I am missing on my side amp. The bass is astounding, the old adage of decent amp + fantastic tube > fantastic amp + decent tube is still true to me.

Happy that this is my last pair of tubes for the next 7months, until the waitlist for Mischa's amp build queue get freed up for mine - hoping I don't overuse them until the time comes :)

Custom Leo Research EL34 based amp? That is new to me but it looks great.

Bass is astounding is an accurate description of the TS 6550.

What is Mischa building for you? Another EL34 amp?

You know TS 6550 is just the start. :) You need Philips Miniwatt EL34 double D getters brown base and Philips Miniwatt EL34 metal base. Then you get a pair of nice GEC KT88, KT66.

Mischa will be building me an amp similar to the Solar Flare, but with KT66-150 + 6550 + EL34 + 5881 family, no superpowered 300b (or whatever that setting was for the Solar Flare, just regular 300b) and estat out though. I already have a ton of 6J5s so his recommended setup really appeals to me

Too early to count my chickens though, still a 6 month wait (not that long compared to others) + build time, but I am extremely excited for that amp

And understood, I only dabbled with a pair of Amperex Holland EL34, when the time comes....more 6550s and EL34s will await me! Who knows I may even let go of my solid state stuff because boy do I love GEC tones

These tube families would be my choice as well.

That's exciting. I love this family of pentode tubes. I await to see your amp when it's completed by Mischa. It's going to be special.

It started for me with an old set-top AM radio in my childhood bedroom that I would fall asleep to nightly. Then my parents scored an old Philips (?) receiver playing out to those 1960's style in-ceiling speakers. The first time I heard John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" through that ancient setup, I knew the power of music to communicate would inform my life's journey too.

These memories are priceless. It will linger in our minds even after we've gone on with better gear.
