At some point this year I will be finding out for myself when I take delivery of my Aegis, so looking forward to it . Not the commercial one from ZMF.The GEC KT66 sounds quite different to the KT88 on my setup! Both are good sounding to me for sure, 88 for energy, 66 for chilling

Yeah go for it. My preference is the earlier grey glass/black base versions, or the larger wartime ST versions, but these are still very nice.Nice, or not? Year?
Are they overkill for headphone amps? Maybe, but there is no denying these (and related) are some of the best tubes ever made. I have some from the 1940's that are still going strong and test NOS .
Thanks for your comments. I have had this tube for a good while now and sounds wonderful. Must be quite an early one being July 1948, now I have the hang of dating them.

If your amp is designed for the kT66 you won’t get any more power out of it by switching to a KT88 though the sound will definitely change. Of course if the amp was designed to get lots of power out of the KT88 you might wreck the KT66. My amp allows me to adjust to power but I’m too cheap to risk blowing up expensive tubes lol.Thank you for the reply, and totally agree. Got a nice pair of GEC KT88’s coming in soon , we all know how the rabbit hole operates . There is some logic in my brain, though rather improbable, that Susvara’s need some power.

Yeah that's the one. This was the first version after the war with the newer shape. I just got hold of 6 that had been in storage for well over 50 years. Absolutely filthy, but cleaned up nice and to my amazement 4 of the 6 tested above NOS.Thanks for your comments. I have had this tube for a good while now and sounds wonderful. The wartime earlier ST type versions (military markings are VT-75) are also worth checking out. Clear glass, grey glass and very rare black glass. Unfortunately these tubes are running at about the same cost as NOS KT88 these days.

Hard to doubt it with those shiny getters.
Yes, and it really does seem a shame to use them, as leftside mentioned in a pm last week. From the same source there is also a quad available, not as nice as the pair, but quite usable, but it would be too much of an expense, as the source won’t split.Hard to doubt it with those shiny getters.

As new as mine when I got mine from a private seller. I won't deny that I paid top dollars for mine but it's lower than ebay and at least I know it's new and with original boxes.
I've used it sparingly on Odyssey and then on Ultimate. Imo still the best tone of my power tubes but you've got to like how a KT88 sound as opposed to a KT66 or EL34. However they are all lovely sounding, just different and we need variety.
