The Pono Player Impressions Thread

May 10, 2015 at 11:56 AM Post #511 of 1,969
I'm not personally in the market for a Pono player, but I see today that Fry's Electronics has a special price on the Pono from today thru 5/16/15.  If you sign up on Fry's website and request a daily "promo code" then you can get a yellow Pono player for $249.99, once you are notified of your promo code.  So, the promo code is worth $150 off the MSRP of $399.99.  Of course, sales tax will be added to the final price...  I have not tried to purchase any products from Fry's online before, but the player is supposed to be available both on-line and in-store.  It's kind of funny though that whenever I go to the store, they tell me my promo code does not register, but I always get the sale price anyway...  So, if anyone wants to try this out, here is a link: http://images.frys.com/art/email/051015_sun091lka/sun_web.html?site=72creativeemail051015#set6

So far it seems to work.  Signed up, signed up for Promo code, came immediately, works on-line.  I'm going to go to the local store and pick one up now.

Thanks. You have no Pono, I will have two.

Wow. I should have waited a while longer! I walked into a Fry's a few weeks ago and bought a Pono off the shelf. Too bad I don't have any real need for another.

Sometimes, I just prefer headphones. I have the speakers and amp, but there's something about headphones. The Pono player works great for me. If I'm walking around the house I just put it in a pocket. If I'm at the computer it just sits on the desk and makes beautiful music. I can listen while ripping other CDs (currently working on a 12-CD set of John Dowland's works, while listening to Elgar's "The Dream of Gerontius") and it's lovely.

I think the MSRP for the yellow PonoPlayer is only $299, not $399, so the promo code's only worth $50. The artist signature series was $399, but the yellow and black players were always $299.

But thanks for sharing.

Kickstarter was $299.  Retail has ALWAYS been $399.  This is a great deal, my local Fry's had about ten of them in a locked case (now one less

(They told me it was an anniversary sale.)

I'm really surprised how much this thing improves with burn-in. I have about 85 hours on mine, and it's just dramatically better, especially in balanced mode.

Also, is anyone using the Pono Player to drive speakers? How are you getting the signal out? Y-cable or 1/8" to XLR or RCA interconnects?

I never used FRYS.com before so I had to sign up for the promo code emails today. They sent me an instant promo code (11-digit) email, but that number doesn't work on frys.com. I had to call and they gave me a new promo code (7-digit) for online. Kinda of a strange system, but it eventually did work.

I just plugged it into my Pioneer receiver using a single end to two-RCA plugs and it works fine.  Very strong driving my Kef speakers (either the 5.1s or the floor standing stereos).

No big change here with burn-in.  It might have improved a bit, but it wasn't dramatic here.

I took my Promo code email in to the store, and they just gave me the discount.  Less sure about how it would work on-line.

Great price, now I have two.
