somehow this idea of mine got me to wondering why sony or microsoft hasnt designed their media players to accept only their own headphones ( new type of jack, strange wiring scheme ) to force buyers into their fold

The thing that keeps me from buying an iPod (apart from the fact that I already have a player that kicks the iPods ass

) is the lack of UMS. I don't wan't to use iTunes or ***Pod, I just wan't to drag my music using the filebrowser of whatever operating system I use. But an iPod without the need of iTunes will probably never happen

I totally agree with you here. I like having my music or the ability to get more music, or anything really, anywhere anytime. That's what mass storage compliance is, when it all comes down to it. My Entempo Spirit has this, and it's also the cheapest HDD-DAP on the market, and it's 20GB's, and most likely expandable to enormous size. That's not to say it doesn't have its faults, but I quickly get over the bugs. Now if only every other DAP maker would follow mass storage compliance guidelines, that would be portable audio paradise.

Also, I don't really care for a built in 1/4" jack on a player, that's why I have the Grado Mini Adaptor. It gets the job done.

I never use UMS. Even on UMS players I use Media Center to load it up... and then I usually give up and go back to the iPod.

Could having a sizeable music library (exceeding the capacity of the player) in decent quality be the "problem"? You know, I believe it might.

AnaPod is a Windows Explorer shell; you drag or right-click send-to your music from window to window.
Whatever.
And the iPod doesn't need iTunes at all.

Hmmm... what I do is go into Winamp->load directory->removable disk(that's what my Spirit shows up as). From there, I can either load the whole shibang, or do it by album, which is my preference. Now, an auto-detect, auto-que up feature would be nice, but I can easily live without it, especially if all I want to do is move data to and from my Spirit.

I can't see what's the problem here. I have > 60GB worth of decent quality music and I'm more than happy to organise it by folder. Genre -> Artist -> Album. I cycle the albums to and fro the player and computer using any explorer in linux. UMS allows me to use to connect to both my computers at work and at home without having to install additional software.
