"warm tilt" indeed, methinks that there is a convergence these days towards the "Harman tilt", which for many die hard head-fi classicists, it's seen as a step back. One concern that was raised and is quite valid in my opinion is that this headphone will only be able to achieve this sound out of the sony amp using the proprietary balanced connection. I will need to determine if this is indeed the case...so another point of study to add to my review.

Depending on what you are look for but from my experience they can get a good bit better from the Z7. A really good headphones can be as musical as the Z7 but are also a lot more resolving and transparent. Sound image can be a lot more precise rather than diffused or hazy with even better depth & width. It is hard to convince people unless they have a chance to compare each headphones side by side. Just be open mind about trying and tweaking your system. Couple of years ago I didn't think a USB cable can matter to the sound but now I do think it can be a deal breaker if you have a DAC with a touch too much treble. Sony previous offerings were really world class. It just a matter if they do want to or not. Plus it is depending on the voicing ultimately.
Most importantly, a good set of closed headphones should sound as "open" as something like the HD800.

Are the z1r fast headphones? I mean to say, if I loaded up Deep Purple's coincidentally named and well recorded album Made In Japan, can this thick sounding warm tilted headphone keep up to pace of heavy rock songs? Planars seem to do this best but a warm phone with clarity/resolution seem to be lacking in the dynamic driver category(not going into IEMs of course).
