Sennheiser HD595 has always lived under the shadow of HD6X0.
For some the HD6X0 is the golden standard, for other it is veiled--I belong to the latter.
Others vigorously debate if HD650 is better than HD600.
In the midst of these debates, HD595 just gets lost.
The HD6X0 fans say 595 is less refined, a second-class citizen of Sennheiser hi-end land.
The anti-HD6X0 folks just thinks Sennheiser is over-hyped and don't bother to carefully audition HD595.
I was like that, too, until I sat down and A/Bed HD650 and HD595.
Since I never liked the HS6X0 veil, I found HD595 much more enjoyable.
Who says HD595 is less refined and resolved?
Next to my K1000 it stills does a good job at classical.
While not as bassy as HD650, the bottom end is still plenty for jazz and rock.
All and all I can't think of a better all-around headphone under $500, better than DT880, K701, HD6X0. I have not heard the new Ultrasones though.
