The Official Echobox Explorer Thread

Right now the 64GB model sits at $450, but that's not quite official yet. We're also planning on offering a combo deal with our all-titanium earphones (retail $199, all-silver cable, too, which everyone at CES is loving for its awesome flexibility; looks and sounds pretty sexy, too, very balanced with just a hint of v-shape without sacrificing transparency or detail in the mids) for $549, basically a $100 discount.

Yep, just like Sennheiser, HiFiMan...plenty of Head-Fi favorites who also have great products that deserve every bit of attention they get.

Also note the copious amounts of front-page material that is either user-generated OC (reviews, articles, etc), random non-sponsoring products, and other things that don't give a red cent to Head-Fi.

There's also all of these very solid reasons: http://www.head-fi.org/t/749496/echobox-the-unveiling-ces-2015#post_11201930

Good to know about the SD card.

The lcd I'm sure goes out with the set power saver 10-60 seconds, but I would hope someone would notice the cable. I suppose it depends on the situation. Probably a non-issue for most. Curious to see how it develops.

I am very interested in this media player or at least I will be once an SD card slot is implemented. The idea of having my music collection with me but also having the option to check out other music through streaming is a strong plus point in my opinion.

I currently live in the UK so my question is will your player be available from some UK sellers or will I need to have it shipped from the US if I wanted to buy? Also what price would it work out as in UK currency?

Thanks.

The cleverness of the flask design only goes so far, in my opinion.  It's clever for about 20 seconds.

Yeah, the screen times out by default; it's a full-featured Android-based OS, though, so if you've got it plugged in and you're worried, you can set the screen to stay on for "about 25 days"

Just wondering, why the flask design? The flask is cool, but seems more like a novelty item than a serious, professional high-end player. The design, to me, doesn't say "professional." I would think a regular (Walkman/iPod Touch) design would be more popular, as well as less awkward; the current design seems like it could be harder to put in a pocket or lay on a desk. Something like the iPod Touch, running Android, having support for Hi-Res, not being as costly as a Walkman, a regular sized SD card (or maybe 2!), and a good internal DAC/Amp would be pretty much what (I assume) everyone here would enjoy. There's the Calyx, but again, insanely priced. Your product has great pricing for what it is. But your current design, with expandable storage and in a more conventional shape, would be a MASSIVE hit. I think this is something that should really be considered for the next iteration of the product.

The flask design is a non issue for - I couldn't care less what anyone thinks it is ....they should be able to see the volume knob and headphones sticking out of it.

Personally I'm not too bothered about the onboard storage size as long as it has microSD slot. I went from a 64GB DX100 to a 8GB DX90, so am used to carrying around a few MicroSD cards.

I'm sitting here listening to ye trusty ole HD650s straight out of that 150mW jack, currently rocking out to the same track I've been using to show this bad boy off for the last few days: Money by Pink Floyd in 24/96 FLAC. Mmmmhmmm.

I'd be lying if I said this wasn't an awesome pairing. We had a gentleman come by from a very prestigious hifi company, which I'm not sure I'm allowed to mention by name since we may be working with them before long, but suffice to say he was very impressed with this pairing.

Honestly I'm tired as hell right now, it's 4 AM in Vegas and I've got about 10 hours of sleep total over the last 3 nights, but I'm up here alone in my room, rocking out solo, replying to PMs and watching this thread obsessively because I'm honestly that excited about this product and our prospects, both from what my own ears tell me as well as the feedback we've been getting from potential partners and distributors. I honestly think this thing could become a Head-Fi staple, and I'm on fixed pay so it's not like I'm raking in extra bucks for being up late chilling on Head-Fi saying this; actually  should really be getting sleep for the show, I have to have the booth ready for the world t see in a shade over 4 hours o_o;  There are quite a few Head-Fiers who have been my friends and acquaintances since before I'd ever even heard of Echobox, and if anyone cares to doubt, they'll tell you I've been all about sharing my love for headphones and audio products simply for the love of sharing and learning since joining Head-Fi over 4 years ago, and a few can even vouch that I have another rather lucrative job with a very promising nanotechnology startup company that I wouldn't be cutting my hours at if I wasn't doing it for the love of music, and if this thing wasn't very legit. I really don't think I could ask for more from a player this size until you get into Astell & Kern and upper-range Hifiman HM-series type money, and from all the meets I've been to and the demos I've done at CES over the last couple of days, I'd even go so far as to say that it plays in their ballpark unless you're rocking some very demanding cans or top-tier CIEMs: the bass goes deep and stays tight, separation is great, and I daresay that the 24/96 vinyl rips from the 1973 UK Repress of DSotM I'm listening to actually bring a bit of the vinyl magic out - very real dynamics, positively romantic and strikingly intimate (but not pushy) mids, and an extremely coherent presentation. And boy is it *dead* silent in the background.

I really hope anyone who's at CES takes a few minutes to stop by our booth and give this little gem a go. If anyone lives in/near Vegas, I'd be glad to set up a demo for you outside of the show. If not, well, you can wait for the reviews I suppose :)

Looking forward to reviews. And impressions from CES (those mystery titanium IEMs too)
Wireless(Bluetooth too?) and streaming are sweet features. But I really do hope to see expandable storage in the final version.

Best of Luck Echobox Audio! Make your mark.

PS: The flask design is.... not to "my" liking. I hope I am mistaken in thinking that the flask design is what you were referring to, when you mentioned "discretion".

There's a bit behind the design, but mostly it's for fun! Let's be real: HiFi is our "grownup" version of toys. It's what we spend our extra money on to make ourselves happy. It's supposed to be fun; isn't it enough to be professional in the rest of your life? I know it is for me...besides, we think that the flask shape is just "fun" enough that it'll pique your friends' interest when they see it. After all, it's not like it looks like an actual toy; we think it's *just* fun enough to be novel, and real leather plus finely machined metals keep it from looking or feeling like any kind of toy at all. When you see and hold it in real life, you know it's a serious product, with enough flair to be more interesting and stylish than a plain old square slab.

I think you'll also find that it's pleasantly ergonomic and sits more stably in the hand than the flat backs we're used to on smartphones and MP3 players. Between the nice arc and the real leather, it's really very easy to hold and feels great in the hand.

It's PERFECT for pockets! The arc sits comfortably against my leg and despite it's thickness, I don't notice it any more than my Nexus 5 in my pocket. It's actually more comfortable than a smartphone when I sit down with it in my pocket, because it hugs the curve of my thigh (this is getting a little weird but **** it) really nicely. I actually feel it move less than my wallet or smartphone; I suppose that has partly to do with the tension created by the thickness (it's about twice as thick as my Nexus 5 laying flat, a bit bulkier than an iPhone 3GS), but then again, if it didn't have that curve, the edges would be rubbing up against or digging into my leg in slacks or slim fit jeans, respectively.

It also sits flat perfectly; the screen is on the rounded edge (yes it's a curved display :D), so the concave part faces down and it sits perfectly on flat surfaces...and sofa/lazyboy arms ;) Take that, slippery slabs!

Here's the thing: it's EXACTLY all of those things you're saying you'd want (well, micro SD to save space), but with a more comfortable AND fun shape.

I'll toss in the idea for multiple card slots; if it makes sense with the internal architecture and production process, we'll do it.

The flask design is unfortunately reminiscent of a novelty product and not a bona fide audiophile DAP. Also piggybacking a portable headphone amp to it will be problematical with the curvature.

Thank you!

Heheh...well a flask is designed to be discreet; that's the whole point! This one is too; it's really not much bigger overall than a 7th gen iPod Classic, so it'll fit in smaller pockets than most flagship Android smartphones (ever tried pocketing a Galaxy Note in slim fit or, god forbid, skinny jeans [not my taste but hey]? Bleh), but I don't think it's really any heavier, and it's more stable and comfortable than either iPod or smartphone in both hand and pocket.

Bluetooth is there, but we're only supporting 4.0 at the moment; I will say that we're in talks with a certain chip manufacturer who is doing some very interesting things with Bluetooth, and we're really looking forward to advancements in the tech that can live up to the quality that the Explorer is capable of putting out.
