Its overwhelming. I have no idea what to get.  Here are some of the things I am looking for:

-decent noise isolation (perhaps noise cancellation, Audio-Technica ATHANC7 in mind)
-should be able to fold for portability
-over/or on ear
-will be used on public transit, so no open headphones (I am looking at you Grado)
-I listen to everything (Jazz, rock, rap, you name it)
-preferably from amazon (i am in canada)
-will be driven by my phone for most of the time.

I feel like my best option is the ATH M50, and HFI 580 but please suggest something lower than  $150.

Take a look at the AKG folding portables. I have only heard the K422, which is unfortunately now discontinued, but it was surprisingly good. They have several current models that fit your requirements.

Can someone compare the ATHANC7 with the ATH M50? I can't find much info on the ATHANC7 so is this because they aren't that great?

Among the ATH M50, HFI 580 and Shure 440, which one has the best isolation?

Im really moving towards the srh 440s due to price.
