Presently I have been using the Audio-Technica ATH-M50's. They sound great, although being a bass head, I could still use even more bass. At any rate, what would be the next step up in my audio journey to upgrade?
 
The M50's are comfortable to me so nothing to much larger.
 
I listen to all ranges of music. I don't need bass cannons, just punchy headset with an upgrade in sound quality.
 
I have also been considering some earbuds was looking at Klipsch stuff.

The Beyerdynamic DT-770 80 ohm version is often recommended as an upgrade to the M50. It's closed and known for killer bass. You don't technically need an amp, but they still benefit from one.

You could try entering planar magnetic headphones like the Mr. Speakers Mad Dogs or the Hifiman HE-400. Very quick, clean, sound. I would recommend an amp with either
