This album drops tomorrow, 8/23. You owe it to yourselves to check this out. Intricate, multi-layered arrangements and pop songs so beautiful you want to cry. This is my album of the year.

Pitchfork just gave it a 9.0 btw, and I for one agree with them wholeheartedly.

Just curious what else is high on your list for this year and how long you've had the new one? Guess it's probably been leaked for awhile since I've seen others comment on it as well. Doesn't seem like there has really been that many outstanding releases this year, at least in the indie rock field. Just a handful. Does Neko sing very much?

The fact that Pitchfork likes it is really a negative for me

But do like previous album so if local Best Buy has good price I will grab it, also will be checking out new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club CD

(Just checked Best Buy, NP $9.99 & BRMC $9.99)

Should I also pick up the Kaiser Cheifs? (or is it too derivitive of previous Britpop groups)

Well, there's been the Spoon CD, Nada Surf is coming out with a new one in September, and though I don't know where you'd put Beck, Guero is a favorite with lots of indie lovers. I'm not a big fan of the Decembrists but many indie people like their new album.

I think for over the past year all of the guys/gal in NP have been knocking them out of the park. Destroyer's Your Blues, AC Newman's The Slow Wonder, Neko's live album, and now this new group release which might be their best yet. I've enjoyed all of their work recently.

Neko sings lead on two songs I believe, they are mid-tempo semi-ballads. No "All for Swinging You Around" this time around.

She does backups for the rest of the album.

Two of what are certainly going to be among the very best albums this year are still to come: Wolf Parade 'Apologies to the Queen Mary' and Animal Collective 'Feels.'

I also like the Stephen Malkmus a lot, Sufjan Stevens's album is very good, I'm sure there are more that slip my mind.

Well yeah, that's kind of what I'm talking about. I'd throw in Andrew Bird which is my favorite and I've really enjoyed a few others by Electrelane and Black Mountain and the Mountain Goats and just started listening to Michah P. Hinson and Richmond Fontaine and a couple of the Brit new-new wave bands like the Editors, and look forward to the new Super Furry Animals, and a few others before year's end, but seems much less solid than some recent years past. I thought the Beck album was kind of a letdown, but like you say, it's not indie rock. Guess Sufjan Stevens is the big runaway right now with many people, but I haven't heard it yet and haven't really loved what I've heard in the past.

But I was really just curious what Fenster's context was for calling it album of the year.

I've had the album for close to three months now, but I still throughly intend to purchase it tomorrow. Also high on my list for this year are the aforementioned Spoon and Decemberists albums. Also Bloc Party's "Silent Alarm", Maximo Park's "A Certain Trigger", The White Stripes' "Get Behind Me Satan", Nikka Costa's "Cantneverdidnothin'" and Supergrass' "Road To Rouen" - another yet-to-be-released title that I will be getting the second it's released.

I just put Twin Cinema in my cart at Amazon after listening to a number of excerpts. Great, refreshing stuff. Very melodic and contagious hooks...

Some of the compositions are almost Beatle/Badfinger-esque in regard to chord changes and harmonies.

Thanks for the heads-up, Fenster!

from what i've heard of the new broken social scene material, the album will be stunning.
this is a session from my local station:

track #2 (for download) is gorgeous

as far as new pornographers, imo, if one owns electric version, then the new album is merely passable

Just cleaned the dust off this one and gave it another listen thanks to this thread. I bought it along with 30 other albums a few weeks back and it kind of got lossed in the shovel.

I am realling enjoying it. There is a lot of depth to the music. Definitely one of the years best. I am still looking forward to getting 'The Magic Numbers' and 'Clap Your Hands Say Yeah' both of which seem to be contenders. I have as yet only passively listened to them.

=Edit In=

After running through Twin Cinemas 1 & 1/2 times I decided to put Spoon - Gimme Fiction in. What a great way to start off an album. Anyways this one is also very good. If only I could find their earlier albums at an affordable price.
