Hi guys, long time. Is anyone using nad m51 DAC with HD800? Is it a good match?

My current DAC is Gustard x16, thought to try a more musical rather than clinical DAC.

Other consideration is R26. Which, I am waiting for a deal.

I haven't done sdr mod, was away due to family needs. I'll DM the owner of this mod.

I once heard my friend's HD800 with cardas cable and Nad entry level DAC, oh my God, it blew my mind away.

I have also poisoned my head by auditioning Orpheus HE-1 😂 Front row experience.

I referred you in my previous post. What was the NAD DAC you had before M51? Wasn't it the NAD D 3045 Hybrid Digital Amplifier?

Thanks for the recommendation. Unfortunately, the Yggdrasil is out of my budget, at around 5k.

Gustard r26 has LAN capabilities and works as a streamer which is a huge plus. Maybe I visit A2A to get a demo and then decide.

I use my HD800 with NAD M51 and Yggdrasil. It's good with M51 but better with Yggdrasil.

That's NAD D1050 back in 2015 and I've bin it long ago. Yggdrasil was bought new since 2017. Have work without a fault since then and worth every penny. M51 is a spare dac because I pick up one in mint condition for $750 a couple of years ago. Had a Bifrost 2 sometime ago but sold that too.

HD800 has a wide soundstage with either Yggdrasil or M51. Coupled with my tube amps, it's the one headphone I still kept since 2017. All others have come and gone - He1000se, LCD4, LCD3f, LCD-X, ZMF Verite Open, Eikon, Atticus.

So it's Susvara and HD800 and Grado GH1 now. Oh there is a HD650. :relaxed:

That's quite a journey. What cable do you use with HD800? Are you using any mods?

I got derailed, sold my Klipsch Rp-160m and bought a Kef R3 Meta, dual REL T9x (sold a Focal and Rel ht 1205) Mono blocks. That's my main setup these days.

Tonight I turned on my Elise and HD800 after many years (2 or 3 I guess). The Philips tubes EL3N with adapters hum and totally killed my joy. I just swapped the default tubes to check Elise still got it, totally head silent. I need to also figure out the best driver tubes.

Adding a WiiM Pro Plus for streaming. It's been a while.

Advice:

I know the 800 and early 800S. I understand that the 800S has been somewhat modified over the earlier one in the past few years.

If so, when was that? Is there consensus on that and where built? Thinking of buying a used one, so TIA.

Wow, fascinating. I had no knowledge of that work. I own two pair of HD800, with close S/Ns of around 35,000. I swap 'em out every listening session; they sound the same to me. I now run the Bryston amp in low gain mode and that has tamed the sibilance completely. I don't use any mods nor DSP, because, as JAR wrote, that covers up the sound instead of enhancing it.
