Hi guys!! Looking forward to some great feedback from what looks like a great forum.

So I am looking to finally dive into the world of real headphones with my budget around USD 300. I live in NZ so it's equivalent to what I want to spend. My main use is primarily music but I also game and watch movies, etc. I want to get a set of stereo headphones and attach a mic when I need it. My sources are my PC, iPhone, xbox1 maybe. As for music taste I listen to a lot of trance/house and acoustic rock. I'm thinking over ear and closed or semi open headphones?? Mainly because I might use them at work but I am open to the idea of open headphones.

I am also considering a DAC! But my knowledge here is lacking. Probably 200 budget.

I think getting a DAC is necessary for PC audio. It clears the signal, and most PC's sound cards are crap. So you should get a DAC with the headphones.
 
You can look at Shure SRH-840, Beyerdynamic DT770, Sony MDR-1R, AKG K550, V-Moda M100...

V-Moda M100 are epic. For open there is the HiFiMan - HE-400

I second the m100 and dt770 for bss heavy choices

Theres the nad hp50 if you want to go for a more balanced sound

I am seriously considering the M100s as I want to get the boom pro mic! I also like the Shore SRH840's. What would be a comparison between those two headphones? From what I have read it seems that the SRH840 are a little bit better balanced and the M100 have better bass control/ punchier bass.
 
Also looking for an DAC if anyone has some options there. I like the look of the Audio Engine D1? Opinions??

840 has no bass.   I don't like it personally. I listen to mainly EDM, which has driving bass line. If you listen to a lot of classical music, you should probably stay away from the M100. But if you listen to mostly contemporary music, M100 is where it's at.

I am looking into the M100s but hard to find in NZ. Can I order straight from V Moda? Had a listen to some Sennheiser Momentums and I was impressed. M100s Vs momentums??

I'd get the M100 or the ATH WS99.  I'd skip on the Momentum.

There has been alot of support for the M100s both in this thread and my comparison thread. And as aslong as I can get them, They will be my choice I believe. Anyone suggest a DAC to go with them?? Been looking at the FiiO E17 or the E17 + E09K combo. Any thoughts?

The E17 by itself would be great.  The E09k would just give you more volume, which is definitely not needed with the M100.

I'm guessing you are talking about the Momentum On-Ear version?

M100s for a good bit more (and deeper) bass. If that's not what you are looking for, stick with the Momentums. They are quite different headphones. These are two good reviews for comparing (same reviewer):

What do you want to use the DAC/amp with? Also, I think it's best to get the headphones and see where you feel you have the need for a DAC/amp the most (or not at all) since you plan on using it with a number sources. If just PC for gaming, could be your best choice would be a soundcard. Sort of depends on where you need it.

The momentum over ear headphones! The DAC use is mainly for music/movies from PC/iphone. Gaming not so much. To be honest I think I am just going to go with the M100's and see how I go. Alot of comments on that review of the M-100s stating that the mids and highs were sometimes lost due to the bass presence? But I guess that comes back to what you are listen to?

The V-Moda's will have recessed mids in comparison.

E17 could be a good way to go then since you need PC and iPhone. Although personally I would wait and see first.
