I agree with blessingx in many ways. Of the people who criticize the iPod, some have good points, but many are lame-o Apple haters who criticize anything Apple.
(There are also iPod users who will not criticize the iPod, no matter what.) So beware of "recommendations" in threads like these.

I'll give you the scratching, but the iPod is a brick, and with no moving parts besides the hard drive, the chances of something breaking go way down.

2) Features - the ihp has a plethora of features that the ipod does not have (unless u want to buy countless belkin accessories that will cost even more money). the ihp has fm radio, voice recording with real time encoding. it also has opitcal in/out and a now better leather case. |
The iPod has lots of built-in features the iHP doesn't. It also has more potential because of its guts. On the other hand, the iHP has an FM tuner and optical in/out. What it comes down to isn't "number of features," but which features you'll actually use on a daily basis.
I also find it quite odd the people criticize the iPod because it has more available accessories
The fact that you can buy voice recorders, docking speakers, media readers, FM transmitters, external battery packs, etc., etc., etc. is a plus.
You also have to factor in the other things the iPod can do with its stock software:
Auto-syncing photo storage (you can use it for this without the Belkin adapter)
Bootable FireWire hard drive
Contacts
Calendar
Formatted notes
Alarm clock
Games
Finally, one "feature" many people forget is iTunes. I'd personally pay $50-$100 more for an MP3 player just to get the kind of seamless syncing and song management provided by iTunes.

4) Remote with an LCD! - the ihp's remote is the only one with a nice lcd which displays artist, title, bitrate. the ipods skimpy remote is pale in comparison. |
I agree -- the iPod remote needs an LCD and a jog dial. (Although who gives a rat's butt if the LCD shows the bitrate?)

5) Main lcd- i think the ihp's main lcd displays much more info and is overall better than the ipod's. |
I disagree. The iPod's display is more usable, to me.

OGG Support- ihp supports OGG while ipod does not. |
The iPod supports AAC while the iHP doesn't. No big deal either way, except that the iHP can't use iMS music.
