Nice review here:

http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/slappa-...ts-review.html

In my research for a good and "affordable" cd repairing system (quite a bit upscale from CD Disc Doctor, I will post moer info on that later in another thread.), I have discovered that while storing your CD's in their jewel cases is the best for keeping them at home, jewel cases are one of the absolute worst way to transport them.

Want proof? Go to your local library. Check out their CD's. You will see some hideous circular scratchs of death. Where do these scratches come from? Quite simply as the jewel case jostles around in a bag or whatever you are trandporting them in, the disc spins inside the jewel case, and the bottom surface of the disc gets scratched by the inside of the jewel case.

So I am definitely considering buying a Slappa case for transporting CD's. I still believe that even the Slappa case will result in scratching eventually, but it is far better than using standard jewel cases.

It should be noted that those mini (half thick) jewel cases hold discs more securely and are not prone to spinning in their cases like regular jewel cases.

Ah Ed,

You are the eternal skeptic and I can't say I blame you. While I don't see How a disc could ever get scratched in a Slappa case,I'm sure that somehow, someway it is possible. Highly unlikely but still possible. I've been using them for few months and they have treated my discs with great care. I'm happy, as I think you will be.

I just think most people who check out discs don't give a rat's ass. Check out a DVD from a rental place and you will see the same thing. The rental case holds the DVD tightly so it can't spin, but people still scratch the hell out of them. I swear people must scrape them on the concrete. I really wish I could see a disc's life to understand how they get scratched.

Oh yeah, back on topic. I ordered one of the new Slappa Cases and I have no doubt it is a great way to store CDs.

The slappa cases are attractive and pretty nicely constructed. One thing though--remember to ALWAYS zip it up when picking it up by the handle. My girlfriend *forgot* twice and the weight of the discs/covers is enough to seperate the velvet flaps from the sides of the case...

a shame to at ~$50 bucks for the case, but what can you do?

Informative review. I pre-ordered a Camel Collection 240-disc case last month and I am looking forward to getting it. I have been using a Fellowes 224-disc case so far and it serves the purpose adequately, none of my discs have been damaged by it, but it is kind of cheap and inconvenient as well as having pockets too small for many jewel case inserts. I have high hopes for the Slappa case since it is designed with jewel case inserts in mind.

what you have experienced is not at all normal (Actually the first time I have heard of this). It sounds to me that you have a defective case. Please contact me (or any of us directly) and we will replace the case for you.

Sorry for the inconvenience

I received 3 80/40 slappa cases the week before last, and I'm an owner of the older 128-disc case, and there are some differences. The thing that remains the same is the build quality. Everything is stitched together to make a case that shouldn't fall apart. The outer shell will take a beating, and the inner stitching insures the plastic won't seperate from the sleeve as can happen in more cheaply made cases.

The difference: The plastic cd sleeve covers in this version are not as thick and seem to be of a different material. Also, the cloth that holds the cd's is not as thick, but the outer material feels the same. At any rate, they seem to be treating my cd's just as nicely.

A big pro in favor of the newer version is that the sleeves are not as tight. Not so loose as to have your cd's and covers will fall out, but loose enough that it's easier to take out cd's and covers than before.

Overall, another thumbs up for Slappa!

I just heard back from Dominic over at Slappa and he has offered to send me an updated model of my defective case: no questions asked.

Edwood,

Go ahead and check these out, they're really good people at Slappa and, as they have demonstrated, they're willing to go the extra distance to ensure customer satisfaction.

you are correct in that we went to a different plastic (the compound as well as the thickness). We were using a PVC base before and now are using a Polypropelen based top sheet. The change was based on a customer comment from someone who is an engineer in California. We looked into their suggestions and found using a PP top sheet was better mainly because the base compound was sure not to have a problem in a "ridiculous heat" scenario (IE if you leave PVC in a car in Texas in the middle of summer for 3 days it "could" start to soften......with PP it just cannot happen. The inner materials we use for the pockets are the same as the original

there are a number of other changes that have been posted before.

Thanks for the support and the kind words

Yeah, at first I was mythed that it was a thinner material, but that quickly evaporated when it was like "hey, it's easier to put cd covers in!" and the cd's that go into the front against that plastic don't seem to be in any danger of having the ink bleed onto the plastic.

And just to calm any fears of any potential customers, when I said the felt was a slightly thinner material, we're talking about parts of millimeters here. The outter part of the material is at least as good as the original slappa cases, maybe better. At any rate, it's all put together nicely for a great way to take care of your cd's.

Another thing - I'm picky about cases. All my pda cases (palm IIIC, Ipaq 3650, Sony Clie 770, Loox, Jornada 568, Ipaq 2210), as well as ipod have gone through many cases. In the end, I always went back to Vaja - http://www.vajacases.com . My current ipaq 2210 and ipod are both in Vaja i-Volution cases, so yes, I'm picky when it comes to a good case.

The material on the camel slappa case is cool, kind of like a rough kind of suede.
